The SWG's February 2017 Newsletter has been posted!

Just in case you missed our last edition, on 15th January we introduced a new approach to our Challenges, and launched the theme Taboo as our current Challenge. If you are creating fanwork and wish to earn a participant stamp for the Taboo bingo card, your piece must be uploaded to our archive by 10th February 2017. Review challenges never expire; however, we ask that you send an email to moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org in case you need a reviewer stamp for a challenge that is more than two months old. To check the complete Taboo prompt or the new Challenges guidelines please check here.

Our “Special Projects” section now offers you the opportunity to revisit the 2014 Silmarillion Reread event, hosted by Independence1776 and Lyra.

For the character biography this month, Robinka writes about Saeros, councillor of King Thingol in Menegroth. His jealousy of the King's favors to mortal Túrin triggered the events that led to his own death and made Túrin choose a life of outlawry. As well as Saeron's motivations and background, Robinka explores how this character evolved along with Tolkien's vision of the story of the Children of Húrin.

If you're looking for fiction to read, more than thirty stories were added or updated on our archive during the past month of January. Additionally, our Around the World and Web section includes recent articles of interest, fandom events, and calls for papers.

As always, many hands and minds go into making our newsletter possible. Thanks this month go to Robinka, Elleth, Rhapsody, Dawn, and Angelica for creating and compiling our newsletter content.

This is a friendly reminder that there is one week left in the Taboo challenge! Choose one, multiple, a row, or an entire card of prompts from our Taboo bingo card. Taboo challenge stories are due on the SWG archive no later than February 10, 2017, in order to be eligible to receive a stamp for that month. That's one week away!

Of course, if inspiration strikes you after the 10th, you are welcome to continue using the challenge bingo card, but late entries will not receive stamps.

Our challenges involve both a writing and a reviewing component. Several Taboo stories have been posted already. Check out the Taboo stories here and consider reviewing one or a few (or all!) of them. There is no deadline for the review challenge.
