Community Tagging System
Nov. 11th, 2006 06:25 pmI usually don't interrupt mid-month for moderator-type posts, but yesterday,
tarion_anarore told me that all old entries in our LJ community have been tagged. Many thanks to
tarion_anarore and
appoggiato for getting this done so quickly!
I wanted to let everyone know the system that we have decided to use, which should make it easier to search for stories that interest you and manage your posts. So far, we have decided to tag entries by major characters and LJ username. So a story that I wrote on Fëanor and Nerdanel would be tagged as "feanor," "nerdanel," and "dawn_felagund."
What are the advantages of this? For one, it lets visitors to our LJ find stories on their favorite characters with minimal fuss. Since LJ isn't intended as a story archive, it is easy to find oneself saying, "I swear I read this here, and now I can't find it!" Frustration or lack of knowledge on how to navigate LJ can lead one to give up, and no author wants that. I have spent many hours myself searching the archive for old posts that would be easily found if we had a tagging system.
Secondly, by tagging all entries with your username, it will allow you to find all of your posts in one easy action. If you want to find the stories you've posted or get your comments, this is much easier than flipping back through the archive. Also, if a visitor or member likes one of your stories and wants to read what else you have written, this action is a single click away--versus a couple dozen.
You are welcome--and encouraged--to tag your own entries. Instructions for how to do so easily follow below. However, if you are not comfortable with tagging or forget--no big deal! One of our maintainers will tag the entry for you. I also urge you to check your old entries to make sure that we have listed the correct major characters for your work.
A complete list of community tags can be found here. Simply find your username on the list, click on it, and all of your old entries will be listed. Follow the instructions below if you wish to edit the tags.
In the weeks to come, I will revise our userinfo to include links to our most popular tags as well as the listing above. Please do not hesitate to ask questions at any time; simply post a comment to this entry or send me an email at DawnFelagund@comcast.net.
