What is instadrabbling? Instadrabbling is a long-standing community activity in the Tolkien fanfiction fandom. A group of friends gets together on chat, someone throws out a prompt or four, and everyone writes a drabble (or whatever comes to mind). We share our creations in the server and admire each other's work. Instadrabbling is low-pressure and casual, and all are encouraged to participate to whatever degree they are comfortable. Instadrabbling responses shared on our server can be about any aspect of Tolkien's legendarium, not just Silmworks.

When we instadrabble, we meet on the #instadrabbling channel on our Discord server. Discord invites can be requested at any time from the moderators. All are welcome to join the Discord, whether you want to instadrabble with us or not!

As part of the Jubilee, we will be hosting two instadrabbling sessions on Saturday, January 18, and Sunday, January 19. The format will be open but will definitely include challenge prompts to help with stamp-collecting efforts!

Session 1: Saturday, January 18, 15:00/3PM UTC (find this in my timezone)

Text reads: Instadrabbling: Saturday, February 17, 1pm/13:00 UTC; Sunday, February 18, Midnight UTCFebruary 15 is the International Fanworks Day, and we will be celebrating this year with an instadrabbling session the following weekend, on 17 February 2024 at 13:00/1PM until 17:00/5PM UTC (see this in your timezone) and again on 18 February 2024 at midnight until 2:00AM UTC (see this in your timezone). This instadrabbling session will also be a part of our Meet & Greet challenge and will provide one way to collect prompts for this challenge.

What is the Meet & Greet challenge? Every year, we run a Matryoshka challenge where participants receive two or more prompts, which you open one by one to create a fanwork that responds to each new prompt as you go.

This year, our Matryoshka challenge comes with a twist. We will send participants only the first prompt. It is up to you to seek out additional prompts from other participants in the challenge!

You can interact directly with other participants to pick up more prompts. SWG moderators also have prompts to give out; connect with us here! If you prefer not to interact directly with anyone, you can seek out prompts posted publicly to participants' social media.

The Meet & Greet challenge begins on February 15, but you can sign up now to get your prompts as soon as the challenge starts. Complete Meet & Greet challenge guidelines are here.

Instadrabbling is a longstanding Tolkien fanfiction tradition where creators gather, make flash fanworks, and share those fanworks based on prompts shared as part of a chat session. Our January challenge (not posted yet) will include instadrabbling using challenge prompts!

We will hold two sessions on the SWG Discord server:

We will be instadrabbling twice this weekend on the Silmarillion Writers' Guild Discord server, as part of our current challenge Middle-earth Olympics. All Tolkien fanworks creators are welcome to join us!

Instadrabbling will start on Sunday, 1 August 2021, at 1:00 and 15:00 UTC. It runs until it stops and falls over. Convert UTC into your timezone here. (Note that, in the Americas, the 1:00 UTC event is tonight, so if you'd like to hang out with a bunch of Tolkien folks on a Saturday night, come join us!)

  • What is instadrabbling? Instadrabbling is a long-standing collaborative creative activity in the Tolkien fic fandom. A group gets together on a chat, someone throws out a prompt, and everyone creates a fanwork using that prompt.

  • Traditionally, the fanwork created is a perfect drabble (100 words). However, we are more interested in having fun than being traditional. All fanworks of all types (not just fic and certainly not just drabbles!) are welcomed and encouraged. (Note also that all Tolkien-based fanworks are welcome, not just Silmarillion-based.)

  • Prompts are traditionally four words chosen randomly from the nearest book on hand. This weekend's prompts will have a Middle-earth Olympics twist.

  • Then everyone posts their fanwork in the chat and much oohing and aahing occur!

You can join our Discord server here. Note that this invite expires after the events are over, but we always welcome new members. Request an invite to our Discord server via our website or leave a comment on this post.

SWG Official Ribbon-Cutting Celebration

We are thrilled to announce the completion of our new website--the first step forward in building a more vibrant and inclusive community for Tolkien fans to enjoy. In celebration of this watershed moment for our group, we will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 24 and 25, featuring a live reading and instadrabbling session! There will be two sessions, timed to welcome as many of our members from around the world as we can.

Saturday, April 24, 23:00/11PM UTC (find this in my timezone)
Sunday, April 25, 15:00/3PM UTC (find this in my timezone)

The celebration will be held on the SWG's Discord server. (Not a member of our Discord server but want to join? See below!)

Live Reading

We'll kick off the event with a tribute and toast to the new site, then hand the mic to our members to share readings of ficlets, poems, and excerpts from Tolkien to mark the occasion.

  • If you're reading a poem or ficlet, please read only a work you have authored.

  • Selections should focus on the broad themes of renewal and looking toward the future.

  • Please choose a selection that can be read in five minutes or less.

If you want to read, complete this form. You can read at one or both sessions. At this time, we're asking for one selection per reader, but if you'd be interested in reading more, let us know in the Notes field on the form. If we have room, we will add you in! Once you've signed up, you'll hear from a moderator within the next week to confirm your reading time.

Just want to listen in? Listeners are more than welcome! Join our Discord server or look for a link on the date of the event to join in. We will also record the reading* so that those unable to attend can listen later.

* Participants can opt out of the recording; just check the appropriate box on the form above.

Instadrabbling

Instadrabbling is a long-running Tolkien fanfiction tradition carried on for at least the better part of two decades. Traditionally, a group gathers on a chat server, one participant offers four words chosen at random from the closest book at hand, and all participants create a perfect drabble using those four words, post their work, and squee and celebrate!

For this event, in an effort to welcome as many participants as we can, our expectations are considerably looser. Prompts will focus on the theme of renewal. Prompts can be anything at all: a quote, an image, a video clip, a song, a passage from Tolkien ... even the traditional four-word prompt! Participants are welcome to bring a prompt or simply create using the prompts offered by others.

All fanworks are welcome. While the tradition is a perfect 100-word drabble, if that's too short? (Too long??) Write something else! Write a poem or a short story. Don't write? Do a sketch using the prompts, work on a cosplay project, make a playlist--any and all creativity is welcome!

Participants are also welcome who don't want to create fanworks of their own but want to enjoy those made by others and join in the conversation. Join our Discord server or look for a link on the date of the event to join in.

How to Join Our Discord Server

If you're an SWG member, log in to the site and scroll to the bottom, where you'll find a link to our Discord server. If you're not a member of our site yet (do you want to be??), contact our mod team or leave a comment here, and we'll send you an invite.

We'll also post invite links on our site and social media that can be used at the time of the events to join in.

Lockdown Instadrabbling on Sunday March 29 at 8 AM EDT
Still locked in? Still bored? We are hosting a second round of instadrabbling this coming Sunday, March 29, on the SWG’s Discord server, beginning no later than 8AM Eastern Time. Let’s enjoy each other’s company and make creative things together!

What is instadrabbling? Instadrabbling is a social writing activity that has existed in our fandom for at least fifteen years. Traditionally, we get together in a chat server, choose four words at random from the nearest book at hand, and write perfect drabbles (100 words). We share our drabbles with each other, squee, and celebrate!

That being said, traditional is not a word we’ve ever embraced in the SWG, and while we’ll offer traditional prompts, we welcome all Tolkien fanworks creators. You do not need to be a writer, do not need to write drabbles, and do not have to write about The Silmarillion. All forms of fanworks and all of Tolkien’s works are fair game!

How to join? If you want to participate, you can email us at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org or PM me, and we will send you an invite now. On Sunday, we will post an open invite here, and you are welcome to join then.

Lockdown Instradrabbling March 25
Sheltering in place? Locked down? Self-isolating? Next Wednesday, March 25, we are going to hold Lockdown Instadrabbling on the Silmarillion Writers’ Guild Discord server to spend time with fellow fans (while practicing social distancing!) and bring art and joy to the world at a time when it very much needs it. I will be online to start us off at 8 AM Eastern Time, but anyone who wants to start earlier should feel free to do so.

What is instadrabbling? Traditionally, instadrabbling involves a group of writers getting together, choosing four random words from a book, and using those four words to write and share drabbles (exactly 100 words). However, since at the SWG, we are much more about creativity than conformity, we welcome all Tolkien fanworks creators (not just Silmarillion and not just writers) to come together and make and share fannish things. We’ll certainly be drabbling to traditional prompts during that time, but all are welcome to write, create, read, squee, and just hang out!

Open invites to our server are temporarily closed, but anyone who wishes to join us can email us at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org or PM me on any of my social media platforms, and I will send an invite to join the server now. On the day of instadrabbling, I will open and post an invite across all of our spaces for those who want to participate.

Barton River at SunsetThis coming Saturday, June 22, we will be instadrabbling on our Discord. All are welcome to join us! I will be online to start at 9 AM EST (2 PM GMT), but if folks are online and want to start before then, feel free!

If you need to join our Discord, this link should do the trick!

What is instadrabbling? Instadrabbling has been happening in the Tolkienfic fandom for at least 15 years. It involves gathering in real time to write flash fiction together. Traditionally, participants use four words as a prompt, chosen at random by one of the participants from the book nearest to hand. Traditionally, participants each create a drabble (exactly 100 words) using those four words. Everyone posts their work for a prompt set and oohs and aahs and celebrates and squees.

On the SWG, we are not as bound to tradition. What matters is getting together to create, share, and celebrate our fanworks in real time. All types of fanwork are welcome, so if you want to make art or a playlist or aren't quite up for disciplining your writing to exactly 100 words, you're still welcome! There is a NSFW channel if adult-oriented fanworks are your speed. The only requirement is that fanworks shared be Tolkien-based.

Please feel free to signal boost to others who enjoy Tolkien fanfiction but might miss this message.

I (Dawn) have a bit of a breather over the next week and would love to hang out and catch up with some fandom folk! If you’re interested, I’ll be on our Discord for instadrabbling on Sunday, November 18, beginning at around 10AM EST. (Although feel free to start early without me.)

If you want to join us and aren’t on our Discord already, you can join here.

If you’ve never instadrabbled before, it is the spontaneous production of short-short fics based on a prompt, usually four words chosen at random. True drabbles are exactly 100 words but we’re not picky--all creative works, including art and non-drabbles, are welcome!

SWG 13th Birthday Banner

Now that the SWG is officially a teenager (and legally able to sign up for social media under the U.S. COPPA law), we have decided it is old enough to have its own Discord server. So, as a birthday gift to the Silmarillion fandom that has given us a reason to exist for 13 wonderful years now, we are thrilled to announce that the SWG is now on Discord!

We are hoping to use our Discord for collaborative and community events about our members and friends in the Tolkienfic fandom. For our first event, we’d like to invite Silmfic writers and fans to our 13th birthday party on Thursday, August 2, at 1 PM EST, on the SWG Discord for virtual cake, camaraderie, and instadrabbling.

What is instadrabbling? Instadrabbling is when a bunch of writers get together, someone chooses four words at random, and each writer creates and shares a drabble using those four words. (A traditional drabble is exactly 100 words, but as this is all in good fun, all flash fanworks are welcome, including art.) Repeat as many times as wanted with as many sets of words as wanted! Everyone is welcome, whether you want to write, make art, join in the discussion, or just listen in.

If you want to attend, please join our Discord server. (If you’re new to Discord, check out this starter guide, although I found it pretty intuitive to sign up and join my first server with zero experience.) We have a Common Room open for discussion, so please do feel free to start chatting with and saying hi to your fellow Silmarillion fans before the party! If you have an idea for a community event or project that you’d like to see us host or that you’d like to host yourself, please reach out--we welcome comments on this post or can be reached at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

Finally, a huge thank you to the Silmarillion fandom, who have given us 13 joyful years of living in Middle-earth among some of the coolest Tolkien fans on Arda.
