A little over a month ago, the SWG challenge mods were discussing our upcoming challenge and decided, with a little over a week to go before it started, to completely switch gears. We were supposed to run a challenge about women in leadership (don’t worry, it is coming in a few months, replacing the Olympics-themed challenge that has now been postponed to next year), but as we were listening to the discussions around our Discord server, we worried that we were missing the mark. Not surprisingly, the stress of the current situation meant that many people were short on energy or inspiration, and we didn’t think that piling on one more big challenge for people to want to do and feel guilty for missing was the answer. So we designed our Block Party, hoping to offer multiple points of entry for people who engage with Tolkien fanworks in various ways: readers, commenters, artists, and writers. Recognizing how many of us feel lonely right now, we also wanted to offer chances to socialize with each other.

Today marks the closing event for Block Party: Image Instadrabbling! Instadrabbling has a long history in online Tolkien fanfiction and is a favorite activity on our server. Traditionally, the prompts are four words chosen at random from the closest book at hand and the traditional response is a perfect 100-word drabble. Today, we add a twist: instead of four random words, we’re asking participants to bring an image as a prompt* (though you’re welcome to join us even if you don’t bring/offer a prompt!). And as always, we value creativity over conformity and welcome all Tolkien-based fanworks, not just writing and certainly not just drabbling!

*While images don’t have to be created for this event and don’t even have to be yours, please respect fan artists by not offering others’ artwork unless you have their permission or such use falls within the artists’ clearly stated usage guidelines.

If you’d like to join us, join our Discord server here and scroll down to #image-instadrabbling in the SWG Events section. Again, we welcome all Tolkien fanworks creators and readers, including those who just want to join us to read and socialize! Rules and prompts will be pinned in the channel.

Usually, our challenge deadline for stamps is the 10th, the day the challenge ends, but given the rather unique nature of Block Party, I’m extending the deadline until May 15th. If you created a fanwork for Block Party, please make sure it is posted in the correct place on or before the 15th. (Here are the SWG challenge guidelines.) Likewise, if you completed a challenge that didn’t result in something you can post (such as a wishlist fill), please contact the mods to let us know on or before the 15th by emailing us at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

Block Party might be over after today, but we will continue to offer chances on our server to get together, tell stories and make art, and celebrate our love of Tolkien and each other. Watch this space for more!

Tomorrow, we will host the final event for our month-long Block Party: image instadrabbling. Instadrabbling is a long-running form of collaborative storytelling in the Tolkienfic fandom. Ordinarily, you get together with a bunch of friends on IM or chat, someone picks four words at random from the book nearest at hand, and everyone write a perfect drabble (exactly 100 words) using those four words.

We hold instadrabbling events occasionally on the SWG, but this time, we wanted to add a slightly different twist: Instead of four random words, the prompts would be an image.

As always, we are loose on the rules around instadrabbling. Not a writer? Come sketch, sew, work on research or meta, build a playlist ... whatever form of fannish expression makes you happy in that moment! Love to write but hate drabbles? Then write something else! Use the prompts to add to a WIP, make a short story, or write a poem. All Tolkien-based fanworks are welcome!

I will be online around 10 AM EST tomorrow, but I always encourage others who are online before me to get started early if they want. I will post an invite tomorrow to our Discord server for those who would like to join. If you’d like to come join us now, just email the mod team at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org for an invite.

Please bring a favorite image as a prompt! (Though you’re welcome to participate even if you don’t do this. :) Artists, we’d especially love you to bring some of your favorite or thought-provoking pieces, if you’d like to see some fanworks made around your art.

Today was originally our Team Storytelling reveal party. However, it quickly became apparent to the teams involved that we wanted more than one week to work our magic. We're in the process of rescheduling, which means no new prompt for today. However, since prompts are not limited to the day they are posted, today becomes the perfect potpourri day to work on any prompt or project you want! Prompts are on our Block Party page.

I also want to offer a heads-up and reminder that next Sunday, May 10, will be our closing event: image instadrabbling on our Discord server! If you've instadrabbled with us before, you know that the prompt is usually four words chosen at random from the book nearest at hand. This time, we're asking participants to bring an image with them to offer as a prompt. (Don't worry if you don't have time or forget--all are welcome!) Of course, we'd love our artists to bring some of their work if they'd be interested in seeing shortfic written about it, but any image is welcome. As usual, we'll have a NSFW channel available as well. The fanfic book club will be running also, so instadrabbling will be a very casual event: jump in and join when you can!

I will post an invite to our Discord server on the day of instadrabbling but, as always, if you want to join us before then, please do! Email moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org for an invite.

Today's Block Party prompt is Hiding in Plain Sight: We all know Galadriel and Fëanor, but there are many characters who get far less screen time. Create or comment on a fanwork featuring a rare character.

As we've done in the past, we're defining a rare character as one who has five or fewer stories on our archive. There is a list of those characters on the Block Party page, and I will post it as well below the jump.

Rare Character List )

So I've been a total slacker in getting prompts posted. (Actually, I've been the exact opposite of a slacker--busy with work, milking goats, and bottle-feeding kids--but I've been slacking on my to-do list for Block Party.) I'm going to roll up the past three days' worth of prompts into one post! Remember that prompts can be done at any time, not only on the day they’re assigned.

Wishlist Wednesday: Work on a project for someone's wishlist!

Thursday: Together & By Ourselves: Beginning in late March, the Poetry Foundation ran a twelve-day series of poems that captured varying perspectives on hope, solitude, and communal spirit. For the final day of Poetry Month, choose a poem from the Poetry Foundation’s "Together and By Ourselves" series and use all or part of that poem as inspiration for a fanwork. Poems are linked on the Block Party page.

Feedback Friday: Leave feedback on a fanwork with no feedback yet. (Which I will also point out satisfies a few wishes on the wishlist! Double-dipping is totally permitted!)

Also I want to note that we'll be pushing the Team Storytelling reveal to some as-yet-undetermined time in the future.

As always, all prompts, guidelines, etc etc can be found on our Block Party page!

Here's two days' worth of prompts since I missed posting yesterday's--didn't even remember that I forgot until I was in bed last night!

Meta Monday: Create a piece of meta! Whether your favourite headcanon, a family tree or a whole essay, anything nonfiction counts.

Tuesday Try: Strike out a new direction - read or create in a genre you’ve never done before.

Since prompts don't have to be done on the day their posted, you can do them whenever! Likewise, if you've already completed one before it was posted--yes, it counts!

We will be discussing stories on our Discord server all day today. Come join us and scroll down to the #fanfiction-book-club channel to join the discussion. You do not have to be signed up--all are welcome!

The schedule can be found on our Block Party page. Having now read almost every story on the list, it is a wonderful variety of thought-provoking and well-craft stories. That same link also has some guiding questions if you need some direction in how to talk about stories in a discussion like this.

I missed posting yesterday’s prompt due to waking up to a surprise in my barn, so today’s reminder includes Friday’s and today’s. Remember that prompts are not date-specific, so you can complete the prompts whenever--heck, if you’ve already completed a prompt, it counts!

Feedback Friday: Leave feedback for a creator you’ve never given feedback to before.

Rare Pair Care: Skippering a sailboat? Paddling a canoe? Today’s your day! Create a fanwork centering on a rare pairing.

Other Upcoming Stuff:

  • Tomorrow is our first-ever Fanfiction Book Club! While sign-ups for having a story discussed have closed, anyone is welcome to join us to discuss stories. I’ll post an invite to our Discord tomorrow; if you want to join us early, email the mods at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org for an invite. The link above has the schedule of stories we’ll be discussing.
  • Tomorrow, is also the last day to sign up for Team Storytelling. Get together with a friend or four, we will send you some “ingredients” to include, and conspire to make a Tolkien fanwork together. We will have a reveal party next Sunday, May 3, for team that want to attend. (Participation is voluntary!)
  • I also want to draw attention to our last event for the Block Party: image instadrabbling. Prompts will be images, and artists, we’d love if you’d bring work you want to see some drabbles and other short fanworks created for. Image instadrabbling is scheduled for Sunday, May 10.

Today is the UN’s World Book Day, and in honor, we are gathering at two times today to read our favorite Tolkien scenes together over voice chat on Discord. We will be meeting at 17:00 GMT (5 PM) and 7 PM EST (19:00). All are welcome! Either bring your favorite scene to read, or just stop by to listen in!

There is a text channel #favorite-scene-reading where we will stage this event. If you want to read, simply pop in here shortly before the event begins, and you will see that I have posted asking for sign-ups. Reply there that you’d like to read and, once the reading begins, we’ll head down the list in order.

A few minutes before the reading begins, I will open the voice channel to let everyone get their audio set up.

Please remember that all Tolkien books are welcome, not just The Silmarillion!

Here is an invite to join our Discord server. If you have problems getting in, or you’ve never used Discord and would like a tutorial, please comment here or email me at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

Today’s prompt reminder post is chock full o’ reminders of upcoming things for the Block Party:

  • First, the prompt reminder: Today is Wishlist Wednesday: “Work on a project for someone’s wishlist.” However, it is not too late to request your own wishes! Our wishlist page has more information and the link.
  • Tomorrow, we will meet on our Discord to read our favorite scenes from Tolkien together, in honor of the UN’s World Book Day. All are welcome to read or just listen in! I will post an invite to the server here tomorrow shortly before the first reading begins; if you’d like to join us early, PM me (or email the mod team at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org) and I’ll send you an invite. We will meet twice: at 17:00 (5PM) GMT, and again at 7 PM (19:00) EST. (Here is a timezone converter.) All of Tolkien’s books are eligible, not just The Silmarillion, so LotR and Hobbit fans, come join us!
  • Our first ever Fanfiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, April 26. While sign-ups for stories are closed, if you would like to participate in the discussion, we appreciate an RSVP so we can make sure each story will have a group to discuss it. The discussion schedule is here, along with a link to the form to RSVP. If you’re not certain you can make it, please don’t RSVP--just show up! Again, this is a Discord event, so I will post an invite shortly before the event begins, but please PM or email me if you’d like to join us early.

Today is Tuesday Try, where if you’re feeling bold, you can push yourself beyond your current boundaries as a creator and Tolkien fan. Today’s prompt:

Try your hand at a form of fanwork you have not done before.

This can be absolutely anything! A poem, a filk, a closet cosplay, a craft, a drabble, a sketch--if you’ve wanted to try it, consider giving it a go!

Please remember that if you complete a prompt that won’t result in a fanwork posted on the SWG (as this one may not) and you want a participant stamp for the Block Party challenge, just let me know. You can comment here or email me at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

Team storytelling is exactly what it sounds like. Get together with a friend or four (i.e., teams of 2-5 people), and during the week of April 27, you will collaborate to make a fanwork together. On the 27th, we will send you four “ingredients” to include in your fanwork. Otherwise, anything Tolkien-based is fair game! Also, do not get hung up on the “storytelling” part of the title; any and all types of fanworks are welcome, and your response does not have to be a story or even include any writing at all!

In short, we hope that people will make things together that are all kinds of creative, weird, and wonderful.

Want to try it but don’t have a team? Fill out the form and check the box that you need a team, and we will try to match you up!

On May 3, we will have a reveal party on our Discord to unveil the fanworks created for this challenge. Attending the reveal party is completely optional! I will contact each team the week of the event to see 1) if your team wants to attend and 2) to work out logistics, like if you want your response read at the party but don’t want to read it yourself. But if you’re not interested in the reveal party (or if your team wants to take more time than the week before the party), we hope you will still join us!

More information on Team Storytelling, including the sign-up form, is available on our website. The last day to sign up is Sunday, April 26.

(And this is the last new event announcement for a while! By necessity, they had to be front-loaded--I promise we’ve done our best to space them out! :D)

Today is our first Meta Monday prompt for Block Party, and it’s a fairly straightforward one:

Read or view a meta fanwork.

Not sure where to start? We have several collections of meta on our website:

We have a lot going on right now for Block Party. Announcements of new projects will begin winding down soon--by necessity, they happen at the start of the event, even though we’ve done our best to space them out--but here is what we have going so far:

  • Wishlists. More than three dozen wishes have been sent in so far! Visit our wishlist page to send in your own wish to make someone else’s wish come true.
  • Fanfic Book Club. If you would like to have one of your stories discussed in our book club, today is the last day to sign up. Sign up on our Fanfiction Book Club page here. Tomorrow, sign-ups will open for people who just want to discuss but don’t want to put forward a story of their own.
  • Favorite Scene Reading. Thursday we will be gathering twice to read our favorite Tolkien scenes together. This post has more about the Favorite Scene Reading.
  • And an announcement about Team Storytelling will be coming soon!

Everything Block Party can be found on our Block Party page.

This coming Thursday, April 23, is the UN’s World Book Day. In honor of it, we’re hosting a casual gathering on our Discord server to share favorite passages from books by our favorite author, J.R.R. Tolkien!

We will be using a voice chat channel on our server to read our favorite passages together. (For those of you familiar with Discord, there is also a text channel for the event where you can volunteer to read since it can feel awkward sometimes to just jump into a voice channel.)

We’re going to have two readings: one in the evening European time, and one in the evening American time. If you know for certain that you’d like to read, and there is a time that works best for you, please comment here or email the SWG mods at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org. I cannot make any guarantees but will certainly do my best to make sure as many people who want to read can participate as possible. Within the next couple of days, I will post the times for the readings.

Listeners are also welcome! I will post an invite to the readings on Thursday here and on our other spaces, so watch out for them and come join us, even if you’re not up to reading. If you’d like to join our Discord now, just email us for an invite.

Finally, although we are the Silmarillion Writers’ Guild, for this event, we welcome readings from all of Tolkien’s works, so LotR and Hobbit fans, come join us!

Here at the SWG, we love Legendarium Ladies April and the work its organizers have done to promote and encourage fanworks about women in the legendarium. So today’s prompt is to make a fanwork using an LLA prompt. LLA prompts can be found here.

Fanfiction Book Club

A few days ago, I posted about our upcoming Fanfiction Book Club on Sunday, April 26. Tomorrow, April 20, is the last day to sign up one of your stories to be discussed in the Book Club. (Sign-ups will open on the 21st for people who only want to participate in the discussion without offering a story of their own.)

The premise of this event is that fanfiction can and should be discussed as literature: as texts that function as works of art beyond their appeal to us as Tolkien fans. We’ve tossed around this idea on our Discord before and decided to go for it by setting aside a day to discuss Tolkienfic stories as one would discuss a story in a book club.

If you want to sign up one of your stories to be discussed, the full details and link to the sign-up form are here. Again, tomorrow (April 20) is the last day to sign up a story. The discussion will take place on a text channel on our Discord server. If you just want to discuss, watch this space beginning on the 21st for details about how to sign up for that. Comment with questions or email the SWG mod team at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

Today's prompt is Ghost Stories: There are many 'textual ghosts' in the legendarium, female characters who must have existed but are unnamed. Pick a textual ghost to center in a fanwork. Elleth's list of textual ghosts is here.

More information on our Block Party is here!

Also, don’t forget that it is not too late to make a wish for our wishlist (and definitely not too late to fill one for someone else!) or to sign up one of your stories for discussion during our Fanfiction Book Club.

dawn_felagund: (swg logo)
[personal profile] dawn_felagund

One of our first live events for our Block Party is the Fanfiction Book Club! This actualizes an idea, tossed around in many fannish spaces and specifically discussed on the SWG’s Discord, that fanfiction deserves to be discussed as literature, not just as something inherently (and only) enjoyable to fans of the original text. In the Fanfiction Book Club, we are going to try out this idea by reading and discussing fanfics as one would in ... well, a book club.

Here is how it will work: If you want your story discussed in the book club, you can sign it up. This is not a workshop! Please sign up stories that are finished and that you are proud of. You should sign up your story no later than Monday, April 20.

(One of the things you will be asked for on the sign-up is when you are available to discuss your story on April 26. This is because we have members in just about every habitable timezone and don't want to freeze out people from participating in, say, Tuvalu because a schedule built around Europe and the Americas means they'd be up in the middle of the night to have an equal shake at talking about their story.)

On April 21, I will put together a discussion schedule. Sign-ups will open to choose the stories you want to read and discuss. Anyone can sign up here, even if you don't have a story being discussed; however, if you have a story being discussed, you need to sign up to discuss at least two stories by someone else. This is simply to ensure that there are more people willing to talk about stories rather than just have theirs talked about. If you have a story on the list, you'll have till April 24 to choose what stories by other authors you want to discuss. Sign-ups will remain open until the event starts.

On Sunday, April 26, we will meet on the SWG Discord server to talk about stories in a text channel, following the schedule. There will be at least one moderator involved to keep time and keep the discussion on-topic. If you’ve never participated in a book club before, I will provide a list of potential discussion questions ahead of time, but discussions are in no way limited to this, and authors should also feel free to ask questions of readers!

The Fanfiction Book Club page has more information and the link to sign up a story, if you’d like your story discussed.

It’s Feedback Friday!

Our Block Party is all about connecting with each other in a joyful way, and what is more joyful than getting feedback on a fanwork you’ve worked so hard on? Today’s prompt is about bringing that joy to someone else and telling a creator whose work you adore just how much it means to you:

Leave feedback on a fanwork you love.

Please remember that if you want a stamp for the Block Party challenge and you are not posting fanworks according to the usual challenge guidelines, you should let me or one of the other mods know so that we can get your stamp for you. We can always be reached via email at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

If you’re wondering what I’m going on about, our Block party page has all the details.

Today’s prompt is Comfort Food! Which means that anything--yes, anything--that you do involving Tolkien fandom + comfort food counts.

Here is the proper prompt:

Comfort Food: When times get tough, the tough get chocolate. Or wine. Or macaroni and cheese. What does comfort food look like for your favorite Legendarium character(s)? How you handle this is up to you - it might spark a food-oriented fanwork, inspire you to try cooking something, or maybe just curl up with something nice to eat or drink and read about food in the Legendarium.

Remember that prompts do not have to be completed on the day they are posted. So if later this month you really need to reread Turin’s chapter in The Silmarillion and cry into a glass of wine, just tuck this prompt away and dust if off for the precisely right moment.

If you’re doing this challenge for a stamp and it does not result in the kind of fanwork you can post according to the challenge guidelines, simply email the mods at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org, let us know you completed a Block Party prompt, and we’ll get you your stamp.

Yesterday, we got quite a few additions to the wishlist. Check them out on our wishlist page, and please continue sending in your own wishes!

If you’re wondering what I’m going on about, our Block party page has all the details.

SWG April Challenge - Block PartyThis month, the mods decided to postpone the challenge we'd originally planned and do something different. We've been hearing around our fandom spaces that, in light of the current lockdown, many people are feeling lonely and having trouble finding inspiration. Given that, we did not think that a single big challenge was going to be successful or what people needed.

Enter Block Party! For this month's challenge, we have a calendar of live events to get people interacting and small prompts and tasks to ease people into creativity and participation, if they choose. We will post each day's prompt or task here.

We do not encourage doing them all! The point of this is not to ramp up productivity or "make the most" of our time in lockdown. It's to offer small, easy ways to get involved for those who want it, as well as to lean on each other's fellowship in a time of literal isolation. The calendar and more information can be found on our Block Party page. Please note that prompts and tasks do not have to be completed on the assigned day--that's why we've published them all now! If you find one at the end of the month that tempts you, then go for it!

This is also the SWG’s monthly challenge for April. Challenge guidelines can be found here, and if you’re completing this challenge for a stamp, fanworks should be posted on or before May 10 to be eligible. Watch this space for daily prompts/tasks (and remember they do not have to be done that day!) and more information on this month's virtual events. The calendar is below the cut; click it to view more information about the various prompts.
