Instadrabbling, August 20, 12:00 UTC and August 21, 23:00 UTC

Instadrabbling is a longstanding Tolkien fanfiction tradition where creators gather, make flash fanworks, and share those fanworks based on prompts shared as part of a chat session. Our next challenge (still to be announced!) will include an instadrabbling session using challenge prompts.

We will gather on the following dates and times on the SWG Discord server:

Never instadrabbled before? We gather on the #instadrabbling channel and create and share flash fanworks in response to prompts. You can learn more about how instadrabbling works here.

To join our Discord server: If you are a logged-in member, you will see an invite link in the footer of all pages on the site. If you're not an archive member, you can contact the moderators or comment here for an invite link.

alternate universe fanfiction book club, January 15-16Have a fic that takes tiny step or a giant leap away from canon? Wrote a fix-it? Changed an outcome? Engaged in a little gender-bending? Decided to fill in the what-happens-in-the-ever-after? Gave Turin a happily-ever-after? Made Miriel Lord (of Angmar)? Created a modern AU where Glorfindel and Legolas are engaged in a merry business war over the largest market share of hair care products (slight edge to the son of Thranduil due to a unique line in beard-grooming products)? Thought of something not listed here? Even better.

The Alternate Universe Book Club will be held Saturday, January 15 and Sunday, January 16 on the SWG's Discord server. Your hosts for this event are Lilith and Shadow.

Here are the guidelines:

  1. Your story should be between 1k - 6k.

  2. It should involve some element(s) of an alternate universe.

  3. It should be a completed story rather than a work-in-progress (excepts from longer works or collections may be elements of a work-in-progress but the section posted should be finished).

  4. If you choose to use a chapter of a longer work, please be certain that the chapter functions as a stand-alone piece.

Sign up for the alternate universe fanfiction book club here. The sign-up will remain open until 11:59 PM UTC 8 January.

To learn more about participating in, attending, or hosting a fanfiction book club, see our book club FAQ.

[admin post] Admin Post: Instadrabbling This Weekend

Jul. 31st, 2021 03:56 pm

We will be instadrabbling twice this weekend on the Silmarillion Writers' Guild Discord server, as part of our current challenge Middle-earth Olympics. All Tolkien fanworks creators are welcome to join us!

Instadrabbling will start on Sunday, 1 August 2021, at 1:00 and 15:00 UTC. It runs until it stops and falls over. Convert UTC into your timezone here. (Note that, in the Americas, the 1:00 UTC event is tonight, so if you'd like to hang out with a bunch of Tolkien folks on a Saturday night, come join us!)

  • What is instadrabbling? Instadrabbling is a long-standing collaborative creative activity in the Tolkien fic fandom. A group gets together on a chat, someone throws out a prompt, and everyone creates a fanwork using that prompt.

  • Traditionally, the fanwork created is a perfect drabble (100 words). However, we are more interested in having fun than being traditional. All fanworks of all types (not just fic and certainly not just drabbles!) are welcomed and encouraged. (Note also that all Tolkien-based fanworks are welcome, not just Silmarillion-based.)

  • Prompts are traditionally four words chosen randomly from the nearest book on hand. This weekend's prompts will have a Middle-earth Olympics twist.

  • Then everyone posts their fanwork in the chat and much oohing and aahing occur!

You can join our Discord server here. Note that this invite expires after the events are over, but we always welcome new members. Request an invite to our Discord server via our website or leave a comment on this post.

[admin post] Admin Post: Relay Writing Today!

Jul. 25th, 2021 09:42 am

We are relay writing today on the SWG Discord, starting at 15:00 UTC. You can join our Discord here. (Note that this invite will expire after the event ends. Message us if you need an invite.)

There need to be 2-4 creators per group to make this work. You do not need to be on a team to participate. Just show up on the #instadrabbling channel and we'll get it figured out!

Relay writing is collaborative fanworks creation. (Even though it's called relay writing, if you want to spend your 15-minute round contributing another type of fanwork to the collaborative effort, that's perfectly fine.) There are four rounds, 15 minutes each. One person starts a story. Each round after, another creator builds on that fanwork. At the end of Round 4, there is presumably a finished fanwork ... but as usual, we're more interested in having fun than being strict on rules, so if you and your collaborators decide to go for extra rounds, that's totally fine!

Tomorrow is the official kick-off of our Middle-earth Olympics challenge! We will be holding a reading on our Discord server on the theme of cultural harmony on July 18 at 15:00 UTC (find the time in your timezone here). Both excerpts from Tolkien or your fanworks are welcome. All are welcome to attend, whether to read or just to listen in.

SWG Ribbon-Cutting CelebrationAfter eight months of work, we are thrilled to officially welcome the SWG site back to the Internet with a ribbon-cutting party. In an effort to welcome our international member base, we will be holding two events on our Discord server. All are welcome, and you can join our Discord here.

Our first event will be held today, at 23:00/11PM UTC. (Find this in your timezone.) We'll start with a dedication and a whole heap of acknowledgements to the many hands and minds that have made this endeavor possible. Then raise a glass of your beverage of choice as we toast another 15 years (and beyond!) of the SWG!

Next, we'll read our fanworks and excerpts from Tolkien around the themes of renewal and moving toward the future. You can sign up here to read, jump in during the open mic time, or simply listen along.

We'll wrap up the event with an instadrabbling session: gathering to create fanworks based on prompts related to our theme and sharing (and squeeing over them) in real time.

Sunday, we'll do it again at 15:00/3PM UTC. (Find this in your timezone.)

Full information and the programs for both events can be found on the website here.

SWG Official Ribbon-Cutting Celebration

We are thrilled to announce the completion of our new website--the first step forward in building a more vibrant and inclusive community for Tolkien fans to enjoy. In celebration of this watershed moment for our group, we will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 24 and 25, featuring a live reading and instadrabbling session! There will be two sessions, timed to welcome as many of our members from around the world as we can.

Saturday, April 24, 23:00/11PM UTC (find this in my timezone)
Sunday, April 25, 15:00/3PM UTC (find this in my timezone)

The celebration will be held on the SWG's Discord server. (Not a member of our Discord server but want to join? See below!)

Live Reading

We'll kick off the event with a tribute and toast to the new site, then hand the mic to our members to share readings of ficlets, poems, and excerpts from Tolkien to mark the occasion.

  • If you're reading a poem or ficlet, please read only a work you have authored.

  • Selections should focus on the broad themes of renewal and looking toward the future.

  • Please choose a selection that can be read in five minutes or less.

If you want to read, complete this form. You can read at one or both sessions. At this time, we're asking for one selection per reader, but if you'd be interested in reading more, let us know in the Notes field on the form. If we have room, we will add you in! Once you've signed up, you'll hear from a moderator within the next week to confirm your reading time.

Just want to listen in? Listeners are more than welcome! Join our Discord server or look for a link on the date of the event to join in. We will also record the reading* so that those unable to attend can listen later.

* Participants can opt out of the recording; just check the appropriate box on the form above.

Instadrabbling

Instadrabbling is a long-running Tolkien fanfiction tradition carried on for at least the better part of two decades. Traditionally, a group gathers on a chat server, one participant offers four words chosen at random from the closest book at hand, and all participants create a perfect drabble using those four words, post their work, and squee and celebrate!

For this event, in an effort to welcome as many participants as we can, our expectations are considerably looser. Prompts will focus on the theme of renewal. Prompts can be anything at all: a quote, an image, a video clip, a song, a passage from Tolkien ... even the traditional four-word prompt! Participants are welcome to bring a prompt or simply create using the prompts offered by others.

All fanworks are welcome. While the tradition is a perfect 100-word drabble, if that's too short? (Too long??) Write something else! Write a poem or a short story. Don't write? Do a sketch using the prompts, work on a cosplay project, make a playlist--any and all creativity is welcome!

Participants are also welcome who don't want to create fanworks of their own but want to enjoy those made by others and join in the conversation. Join our Discord server or look for a link on the date of the event to join in.

How to Join Our Discord Server

If you're an SWG member, log in to the site and scroll to the bottom, where you'll find a link to our Discord server. If you're not a member of our site yet (do you want to be??), contact our mod team or leave a comment here, and we'll send you an invite.

We'll also post invite links on our site and social media that can be used at the time of the events to join in.

Naturalists Guide to Middle-earth challenge banner with a caterpillar and butterfly crawling on a pearToday's bonus prompt is in fact a live event on our Discord server. We will be "image instadrabbling" on our #instadrabbling channel at 0:00 UTC and again at 14:00 UTC using images from the September challenge Naturalist's Guide to Middle-earth.

If you would like to participate, you can join our Discord server here. (You're also welcome to join just to join, but this invite will be closed when image instadrabbling wraps up, so if you missed the event and would still like to check out our server, just email the mods at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.)

What is image instadrabbling? Traditionally, instadrabbling involves getting together in a chat space (in this case our Discord server!) and writing true drabbles (exactly 100 words) in response to a prompt. Prompts are traditionally four words chosen at random from the nearest book at hand.

In this case, of course, we're throwing out tradition and going with prompts that are images from the notebook of an imaginary naturalist who has traveled far and wide across Arda. Likewise, we toss tradition to the wind in acceptable responses as well--any fanwork (not just a drabble) is an acceptable response. Want to write something longer? Shorter? Sketch? Work on a cosplay or research project or video in response to the prompts?? Come join us!

Horror Book Club BannerThis weekend, we will discuss Silmarillion fic stories in the horror genre on our Discord server. Click below the jump for a schedule!

What is a fanfiction book club? Fanfiction book clubs are a chance to treat our fics like serious literature by discussing them like serious literature. What makes a story tick? How does the author craft a story that imaginatively compels and sometimes challenges their readers? In what ways does the author use the canon to build on, expand, and sometimes subvert Tolkien’s ideas?

A friendly reminder that our book clubs are positive-focused, so unless an author asks for concrit, we keep the discussion on what works.

To join the discussion, join our Discord here and scroll down to the #fanfiction-book-club. (New members are welcome regardless of whether you plan to participate in the book club!)Schedule )

Horror Book Club BannerOn October 31 and November 1, we will be hosting a fanfiction book club for horror stories. Discussions will take place on our Discord server--see below for how to join!

Stories that are under or roughly 5,000 words and hosted on the SWG or AO3 are eligible. Stories should be horror fiction based in The Silmarillion; they should be complete or a chapter from a longer work that can stand alone. You can only submit a story that you have written.

We do not set strict rules on participating in other authors’ discussion sessions; however, these book clubs only work if authors are willing to read and discuss others’ work as well as their own. If you sign up, please try to attend at least two other authors’ sessions. You do not need to sign up in order to participate in the discussion.

To sign up one of your stories, use this form.

How does a fanfiction book club work?

Imagine discussing a work of fanfiction as a work of literature, thinking about how the author uses craft and canon to construct a work of literary art, and that’s the basis of our book clubs. What makes the story work? What did we fall in love with? What in the story made us stop and think (or for this book club, check under the bed ...)? Please note that, while authors are allowed to request constructive criticism, our book clubs have a positive focus. We are here to celebrate stories and discuss what works, and the discussion will stay positive unless you specifically request constructive suggestions from your readers.

For this session, stories less than 1,000 words will receive a half-hour time slot for discussion. Longer stories will receive an hour.

If you have a Silmarillion-based horror story that you’d like to discuss, consider signing up! All are welcome to read and join in the discussions of the stories.

How do I join the SWG Discord?

We love newcomers to our Discord server! Please request an invite code by emailing our mod team at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org or leaving a comment here. On the dates of the book club, we will also post an open invite for the day so that others can join the discussion.

A little over a month ago, the SWG challenge mods were discussing our upcoming challenge and decided, with a little over a week to go before it started, to completely switch gears. We were supposed to run a challenge about women in leadership (don’t worry, it is coming in a few months, replacing the Olympics-themed challenge that has now been postponed to next year), but as we were listening to the discussions around our Discord server, we worried that we were missing the mark. Not surprisingly, the stress of the current situation meant that many people were short on energy or inspiration, and we didn’t think that piling on one more big challenge for people to want to do and feel guilty for missing was the answer. So we designed our Block Party, hoping to offer multiple points of entry for people who engage with Tolkien fanworks in various ways: readers, commenters, artists, and writers. Recognizing how many of us feel lonely right now, we also wanted to offer chances to socialize with each other.

Today marks the closing event for Block Party: Image Instadrabbling! Instadrabbling has a long history in online Tolkien fanfiction and is a favorite activity on our server. Traditionally, the prompts are four words chosen at random from the closest book at hand and the traditional response is a perfect 100-word drabble. Today, we add a twist: instead of four random words, we’re asking participants to bring an image as a prompt* (though you’re welcome to join us even if you don’t bring/offer a prompt!). And as always, we value creativity over conformity and welcome all Tolkien-based fanworks, not just writing and certainly not just drabbling!

*While images don’t have to be created for this event and don’t even have to be yours, please respect fan artists by not offering others’ artwork unless you have their permission or such use falls within the artists’ clearly stated usage guidelines.

If you’d like to join us, join our Discord server here and scroll down to #image-instadrabbling in the SWG Events section. Again, we welcome all Tolkien fanworks creators and readers, including those who just want to join us to read and socialize! Rules and prompts will be pinned in the channel.

Usually, our challenge deadline for stamps is the 10th, the day the challenge ends, but given the rather unique nature of Block Party, I’m extending the deadline until May 15th. If you created a fanwork for Block Party, please make sure it is posted in the correct place on or before the 15th. (Here are the SWG challenge guidelines.) Likewise, if you completed a challenge that didn’t result in something you can post (such as a wishlist fill), please contact the mods to let us know on or before the 15th by emailing us at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

Block Party might be over after today, but we will continue to offer chances on our server to get together, tell stories and make art, and celebrate our love of Tolkien and each other. Watch this space for more!

dawn_felagund: (earendil)
[personal profile] dawn_felagund

Tomorrow, we will host the final event for our month-long Block Party: image instadrabbling. Instadrabbling is a long-running form of collaborative storytelling in the Tolkienfic fandom. Ordinarily, you get together with a bunch of friends on IM or chat, someone picks four words at random from the book nearest at hand, and everyone write a perfect drabble (exactly 100 words) using those four words.

We hold instadrabbling events occasionally on the SWG, but this time, we wanted to add a slightly different twist: Instead of four random words, the prompts would be an image.

As always, we are loose on the rules around instadrabbling. Not a writer? Come sketch, sew, work on research or meta, build a playlist ... whatever form of fannish expression makes you happy in that moment! Love to write but hate drabbles? Then write something else! Use the prompts to add to a WIP, make a short story, or write a poem. All Tolkien-based fanworks are welcome!

I will be online around 10 AM EST tomorrow, but I always encourage others who are online before me to get started early if they want. I will post an invite tomorrow to our Discord server for those who would like to join. If you’d like to come join us now, just email the mod team at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org for an invite.

Please bring a favorite image as a prompt! (Though you’re welcome to participate even if you don’t do this. :) Artists, we’d especially love you to bring some of your favorite or thought-provoking pieces, if you’d like to see some fanworks made around your art.

Today was originally our Team Storytelling reveal party. However, it quickly became apparent to the teams involved that we wanted more than one week to work our magic. We're in the process of rescheduling, which means no new prompt for today. However, since prompts are not limited to the day they are posted, today becomes the perfect potpourri day to work on any prompt or project you want! Prompts are on our Block Party page.

I also want to offer a heads-up and reminder that next Sunday, May 10, will be our closing event: image instadrabbling on our Discord server! If you've instadrabbled with us before, you know that the prompt is usually four words chosen at random from the book nearest at hand. This time, we're asking participants to bring an image with them to offer as a prompt. (Don't worry if you don't have time or forget--all are welcome!) Of course, we'd love our artists to bring some of their work if they'd be interested in seeing shortfic written about it, but any image is welcome. As usual, we'll have a NSFW channel available as well. The fanfic book club will be running also, so instadrabbling will be a very casual event: jump in and join when you can!

I will post an invite to our Discord server on the day of instadrabbling but, as always, if you want to join us before then, please do! Email moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org for an invite.

We will be discussing stories on our Discord server all day today. Come join us and scroll down to the #fanfiction-book-club channel to join the discussion. You do not have to be signed up--all are welcome!

The schedule can be found on our Block Party page. Having now read almost every story on the list, it is a wonderful variety of thought-provoking and well-craft stories. That same link also has some guiding questions if you need some direction in how to talk about stories in a discussion like this.

I missed posting yesterday’s prompt due to waking up to a surprise in my barn, so today’s reminder includes Friday’s and today’s. Remember that prompts are not date-specific, so you can complete the prompts whenever--heck, if you’ve already completed a prompt, it counts!

Feedback Friday: Leave feedback for a creator you’ve never given feedback to before.

Rare Pair Care: Skippering a sailboat? Paddling a canoe? Today’s your day! Create a fanwork centering on a rare pairing.

Other Upcoming Stuff:

  • Tomorrow is our first-ever Fanfiction Book Club! While sign-ups for having a story discussed have closed, anyone is welcome to join us to discuss stories. I’ll post an invite to our Discord tomorrow; if you want to join us early, email the mods at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org for an invite. The link above has the schedule of stories we’ll be discussing.
  • Tomorrow, is also the last day to sign up for Team Storytelling. Get together with a friend or four, we will send you some “ingredients” to include, and conspire to make a Tolkien fanwork together. We will have a reveal party next Sunday, May 3, for team that want to attend. (Participation is voluntary!)
  • I also want to draw attention to our last event for the Block Party: image instadrabbling. Prompts will be images, and artists, we’d love if you’d bring work you want to see some drabbles and other short fanworks created for. Image instadrabbling is scheduled for Sunday, May 10.

Today is the UN’s World Book Day, and in honor, we are gathering at two times today to read our favorite Tolkien scenes together over voice chat on Discord. We will be meeting at 17:00 GMT (5 PM) and 7 PM EST (19:00). All are welcome! Either bring your favorite scene to read, or just stop by to listen in!

There is a text channel #favorite-scene-reading where we will stage this event. If you want to read, simply pop in here shortly before the event begins, and you will see that I have posted asking for sign-ups. Reply there that you’d like to read and, once the reading begins, we’ll head down the list in order.

A few minutes before the reading begins, I will open the voice channel to let everyone get their audio set up.

Please remember that all Tolkien books are welcome, not just The Silmarillion!

Here is an invite to join our Discord server. If you have problems getting in, or you’ve never used Discord and would like a tutorial, please comment here or email me at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

Today’s prompt reminder post is chock full o’ reminders of upcoming things for the Block Party:

  • First, the prompt reminder: Today is Wishlist Wednesday: “Work on a project for someone’s wishlist.” However, it is not too late to request your own wishes! Our wishlist page has more information and the link.
  • Tomorrow, we will meet on our Discord to read our favorite scenes from Tolkien together, in honor of the UN’s World Book Day. All are welcome to read or just listen in! I will post an invite to the server here tomorrow shortly before the first reading begins; if you’d like to join us early, PM me (or email the mod team at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org) and I’ll send you an invite. We will meet twice: at 17:00 (5PM) GMT, and again at 7 PM (19:00) EST. (Here is a timezone converter.) All of Tolkien’s books are eligible, not just The Silmarillion, so LotR and Hobbit fans, come join us!
  • Our first ever Fanfiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, April 26. While sign-ups for stories are closed, if you would like to participate in the discussion, we appreciate an RSVP so we can make sure each story will have a group to discuss it. The discussion schedule is here, along with a link to the form to RSVP. If you’re not certain you can make it, please don’t RSVP--just show up! Again, this is a Discord event, so I will post an invite shortly before the event begins, but please PM or email me if you’d like to join us early.
