June's newsletter has been posted on our website!
http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/news/june2013.php
May was a busy month, with lots of activity on the site and in fandom in general, so we have lots to report! First, our featured character this month is Dior, and Oshun has written another of her wonderful biographies, not only giving the quick-and-dirty details about him from the texts but also reviewing his development from the Lost Tales to the published Silmarillion and posing intriguing speculative questions about his effectiveness as a leader. As usual, it is almost impossible to walk away from one of Oshun's biographies without wanting to read and write more about the character she discusses, and this one is no exception!
Anuhealani has produced this month's Featured Podfic: a gorgeous reading of my story "Five Bells." She reads the story exactly as I imagined it in my head (so if you've ever wondered what it's like in my head, go listen to it. Even if you haven't, go listen to it anyway--she did a wonderful job! :)
The SWG will once again be participating in the International Day of Femslash--scheduled this year for July 20--so we invite all of our femslash writers or wannabe-femslash writers to start thinking about stories now so that we can overtake the Web on July 20th with Tolkien-based femslash fic. Also, it's been a while since we begged and pleaded for help with the Library of Tirion section of our archive. This section has lain dormant for a few months now. Dedicated to collecting stories and keeping fandom history alive from before our site existed, the Library of Tirion only works if you suggest your favorite stories and authors who wrote before 2007! :) We are also getting ready to produce our second round of Featured Podfics, so we invite suggestions of stories you'd like to hear recorded as well. See the News section for links and more information.
Fandom has been busy this past month, from debating agency at Alqualonde to the Kindle Worlds announcement. Visit our Around the World and Web section for links to discussions, resources, challenges, and other Tolkien-related news from beyond our group.
In June, we revisit the "Many Meetings" challenge--which asks authors to write a story the doesn't involve physical conflict--and continue the "Arda Underground" challenge. We had a number of new stories and poems added and updated during the month of May, so if you're looking for something to read, check them out.
As always, the continued existence of our newsletter is thanks to the hard work of our contributors. Many, many thanks to Oshun, anuhealani, Rhapsody, Russandol, and Angelica for their help putting together this month's edition!
