The July 2013 newsletter has been posted here:

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/news/july2013.php

We have quite a busy summer going on this year. 'Tis the Season of Writing Dangerously, when you can craft your own challenge to mop up some of your WiPs or to nudge your muses to take on something new. July is also home to the International Day of Femslash, and the SWG will be participating for its fifth year, so we once again invite the femslash fans in our group to post a femslash Silmfic on July 20. And, of course, next month will be Akallabeth in August, when we go nuts for everything Second Age.

Quite a number of groups outside the SWG are hosting challenges as well, whether you want to write for a Big Bang or if ficlets are more your speed. These announcements, as well as articles and resources of interest, can be found in the Around the World and Web section.

We have a new challenge this month, United They Stand, which asks writers to explore issues of equality and emancipation in Arda. Hand-in-hand with that is our revisited challenge, Untold History, which asks writers to take the point of view of a character disfavored by history, in order to tell their story and explore their motives. And, of course, we have a new quote of the month and a list of all of the stories posted to our archive in June as well.

This month's Podfic of the Month is Russandol's hilarious "Spring Cleaning." As Manwe and Varda get ready for guests, we learn a thing or two about Valarin marriage and division of chores. A link to listen to or download this podfic is in the newsletter.

Finally, we have a very special character biography this month: very special because it is Oshun's fiftieth for our site. That's fifty times writing extensively researched, meticulously referenced, and engagingly written full-length essays about every character under the sun, whether she is interested in the character or not, come family crisis or computer problems, and always with grace (and far fewer typos than she'd have you believe). Oshun's biographies are one of the true treasures of the site and an invaluable resource for Tolkien fans everywhere.

This month's (50th!) biography is about Indis. Indis is one of those pivotal characters who, like so many of Tolkien's women, we know so little about. Her love for Finwe and her willingness to marry him against custom changed the history of Arda for both good and bad. Oshun has not only pulled out the details of what we know of Indis but has dug deeper to suggest the woman behind the vague historical figure we are given in the texts. As always, the biography is well worth a read.

As always, most of the effort of producing this newsletter goes to our intrepid volunteers. Thank you Oshun, Rhapsody, Russandol, and Angelica for your assistance in putting together this month's newsletter! I hope everyone enjoys. :)
