July 2007 - eleven years ago!- contained the special date 07/07/07, and while many rushed out to test their luck in games of chance, the SWG decided that nothing says seven like the House of Fëanor. To honour these irresisible characters who have been inspiring some of the Tolkien fandoms most noteworthy creative achievments since long before 2007, we made Seven in '07 a compilation of visual art and creative writing that illustrates the histories of each member of the House of Fëanor. More than two dozen authors and artists aided SWG in this project, the first of the many compilations that we have put together since then.

Throughout the month of July, 2007, we posted a biography of each member of the house of Fëanor which considered the evolution of the characters throughout the Legendarium, together with artwork and excerpts of stories featuring that character and a link to all SWG stories about them: tragic Maedhros, artistic Maglor, bad boy Celegorm (really?), short tempered Caranthir , crafty Curufin , elusive Amrod and Amras and, of course, where it all began, brilliant Feanor and strong Nerdanel . Of course, no Feanorian compilation would be complete without skilled Celebrimbor.

SWG July 2018 Challenge Teen Spirit

At the end of the month of July, the SWG will turn thirteen, thus officially becoming a teenager. In honor of the SWG's birthday, our challenge this month will focus on adolescence in all its difficult, awkward, and revelatory glory.

This month, challenge participants will create a fanwork about an adolescent character or adolescence. Your prompt will come from a random prompt generator. You can choose a prompt from one, several, or all of the four different categories. Fanworks are due by August 12 in order to receive a stamp. As always, late fanworks are welcome but do not receive stamps.

Click here for the challenge prompt generator!

(Friendly hint from your mods: We do not know how many times you "roll" the prompt generator, so if you get a dud on your first roll, feel free to roll again … and again … and again … till you get a prompt you like.)

July is also the month traditionally reserved for honoring femslash and slash in Tolkien fanworks, so if you want to celebrate LGBTQA+ characters and relationships, we encourage you to use the LGBTQA+ category on the prompt generator. Also, SWG moderator Elleth will once again be co-running Tolkien Femslash Week from July 15 to 22, and we encourage our challenge participants to use TFW prompts in their challenge stories as well. (Follow silmladylove on Tumblr for updates on TFW.)

Also remember that, if you are participating in the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang and want to use this challenge in your story, then you are permitted an extension to receive a stamp for that story. Simply let us know (in a comment, ask, or email at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org) the challenge and prompts you are using. We will add your stamps when the TRSB stories are revealed at the end of August.

Finally, it is super-helpful when we're updating stamp collections if you identify in your story notes which prompts you have used in your fanwork and whether you used prompts from other challenges. (Speaking of stamp collections … they are in the process of being updated and should be completed very soon!)
