September 2013 Newsletter Posted
Sep. 1st, 2013 05:19 pmOur September newsletter has been published on time for once! \0/ Don't get too used to it, though, as I'll be back in grad school soon and back to my usual act of attempting last-minute feats whilst flying around by the seat of my pants. However, this month, it is on time and can be found here:

This month's newsletter includes a biography of Annael, written by Silver Trails. Annael is one of those characters I call "index characters" because I always have to look up in the index exactly who they are. But one of the brilliant things about the Silm is that so many of those "index characters" were developed by Tolkien, just to the point where they become intriguing. In her bio of Annael, Silver Trails presents the facts about him from various texts--I won't be forgetting who he is anytime soon!--and tempts us with some of the "what ifs" that form such a crucial jumping-off point for fanfic.
We have had a busy summer here at the SWG. The Season of Writing Dangerously is still in full swing, though entering its final month, and we had our annual Akallabeth in August challenge last month. Every year, we make a heroic effort to list every single last Second Age story on the archive. We almost always fall a little bit shy in this and overlook a few stories. The stories we overlooked this time around are listed in the newsletter and have been added to the master list. Finally, Yahoo! Groups has made some pretty major changes that are impacting some of our members in a major [bad] way. I share what I know about this in the newsletter as well. You will also find a list of the stories added and updated last month on the archive, as well as our group's current challenges.
We're not the only group that's been busy, and our Around the World and Web section includes many announcements of challenges, Big Bangs, and ficswap reveals to keep you busy, whether you want something to read or need inspiration to write. We've also included a list of interesting articles and resources related to Tolkien.
As always, the newsletter is very much a collective effort, with my part primarily putting together the content that our wonderful contributors work to put together each month. Many, many thanks to Silver Trails, Rhapsody, and Russandol, who have contributed to this month's newsletter.
