Our newsletter for July has been posted, a few days late this month because I was out of town on vacation.

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/news/july2014.php

This month's issue features the first part of a two-part biography on Cirdan, written by Oshun. Cirdan is one of those characters who spans all ages and all of the books, only Cirdan really spans all of the ages and books. A participant in the Great Journey from Cuivienen, Cirdan was there for it all. This month's biography covers his role in Middle-earth before the return of the Noldor, including his relationship to other important Silmarillion characters, and during the early First Age. And the beard is addressed too, if you've ever wondered what's going on with that. Oshun has done an excellent job as usual, so I highly recommend checking out her bio this month!

We have a couple of important news items this month. First, the SWG will again participate in Femslash Day, which is scheduled for July 19 this year. If you enjoy writing femslash or want to give it a try, post your work to the archive on this day so that we can join in the massive outpouring of femslash on this fandom holiday. The Silmarillion (re)reading has been on summer break but will be back on July 13 with "Of Beleriand and Its Realms" and "Of the Noldor in Beleriand" open for discussion.

There's quite a bit going on outside of the SWG as well, so check out the Around the World and Web section for announcements from other groups and events. There are quite a few Tolkien-related conferences and gatherings coming up if you want to try to connect offline with other fans. (I'll personally be attending and hopefully again presenting at Mythmoot, and prices are reduced until 31 August, so that's a nudge for anyone in the mid-Atlantic U.S. ;) Russa has also done an awesome job finding interesting articles and resources this month, so if you're looking for something non-fiction to read, check out that section of Around the World and Web.

If you're looking to read a story, Rhapsody has kindly compiled a list of everything added or updated on our archive this month, so why not check one of them out? If you're looking for something to write, we have a new challenge this month, "And the Winner Is ...", which takes the approach of the classic person vs. person conflict by asking you to pit two characters against each other in a match of physical, intellectual, or magical abilities. We also revisit "Sea Voyages" in honor of our character of the month Cirdan.

Finally, I want to note that the Featured Podfic has been given one more month of hiatus. I have received the file from the reader but just didn't get a chance to do what I needed to do with it to have it ready on time, with the crunch at the end of the school year and then being out of town for the end of the month, so we've agreed to restart this feature next month. It's a good one and a long one, so I think it will be worth the wait!

Many, many thanks go to the volunteers who help to create and compile the newsletter each month: Oshun, Rhapsody, Russandol, and Angelica. Because I was out of town, they were pretty much flying solo this month, and they made my job super-easy so that all I had to do was copy and paste their sections into the newsletter when I returned home last night. Thank you all for your help each month in putting together this resource for our site!

I hope everyone enjoys the new newsletter.
