Birthday Query

Hi, everyone,

Today is the due date for the first theme, and our birthday plans ain't going so well! We've received a scattering of entries and theme ideas from a few people (and you know who you are--thank you so much! :) However, we recognize that we are in the middle of summer for most people--a bad time, with schools out and family vacations--and that we've given very short notice due to our own RL issues.

The other mods and I are discussing options over on our forum. But, first, we wanted to make sure that there weren't a dozen people who intend to send in theme/token ideas and stories but just haven't had a chance to do so yet. If you plan on participating, could you reply to this message or drop me a line privately? We want to put together something that will be fun and that people will want to participate in, not force an event at what appears to be a very bad time for many of us.

We do have low-maintenance back-up ideas, so our fifth birthday won't go unrecognized, and, if this event doesn't happen, we will run it at some other time when we can better give it the attention it deserves, possible for B2MeM11. (Yes, the other mods and I do start talking about B2MeM this early! :)

Huzzah! :) I got your email but I am behind again. (That's pretty much a constant state for me, as you know.) Quick 'n' dirty answer: any of the options you chose would be fine. :) But I'll ramble at length later, I'm sure!

Perhaps if you drew the event out a little (starting a bit later, accordingly lasting until later), people might have a bit more time to respond? Since the actual birthday is already past anyway (...right?) perhaps two additional weeks wouldn't matter much either way. Incidentally, the published Silmarillion "comes of age" in Hobbit terms (if you let Hobbit terms apply to the Silm in the first place) on September 15, so that might be a suitable date to wrap up with? With either a full month (starting August 15th) or three+ weeks (starting August 21st, with one month's delay so to say) that'd make a lot more preparation possible. I have to admit that, even though I was technically aware that the celebrations were coming, the actual notice did catch me by surprise... >_>

Our birthday is actually the 27th, so it is still forthcoming! :) (The SWG has both a begetting day and a birthday, neither of which correspond with the first newsletter [September 2005], which inevitably creates confusion, even among those of us who founded the durned thing!) The date snuck up on me too. This summer is going much too fast ...

Anyway, the other mods and I will discuss whether a delay might be helpful! :) Thanks for the suggestion (and the theme--which I did get!)

Yeah, someone seems to have put the year on fast forward, I still keep wondering where April has gone O.ó

No worries--we had to have a discussion on the mod forum about when our birthday actually was! And I still have to look it up from time to time on the Yahoo group to get the exact date. (Despite the fact that both Tolkien sites I manage--SWG and MPTT--were "born" on the same days, four years apart. You'd think remembering July 27th would be easy--nope! :D)

Sounds like fun! Problem is just that I'm on vacation next week and the second week of August, so we'd have to plan around that as far as deadlines are concerned. But other than that, I'm game!

Thanks, Roisin--it helps to know that! :) I've posted on our mod forum about delaying the start a week or two but, on account of time zones and other such intricacies, haven't heard yet.
