Sigurd & Gudrun read-along: 3rd week
Apr. 20th, 2019 09:39 pmThis week (20-26 April) we will be reading the final chunk of The Lay of the Volsungs from The Legend of Sigurd & Gudrun on the sigurd-and-gudrun-reading channel on the SWG Discord: "Brynhild" to "Strife" (with the commentary). Next week we'll be moving on to the Lay of Gudrun.
We're off to a slowish start this time due to Easter commitments, but bunn has already recorded one of her popular readings of the beginning of this section (pinned inside the channel).
Please do join the read-along at any time during the week and also even if you weren’t around for the first or second week! You can comment in the channel at any time that suits you.
Overview for this week:
Sigurd has slain the dragon Fafnir and it has already been suggested that he is heading into entanglement with two different women. (And also, of course, he is doomed, which almost goes without saying...)
Section VI: Brynhild
Sigurd awakens the Valkyrie Brynhild and plights troth with her.
Section VII: Gudrun
Sigurd arrives at the court of the Niflungs, the family of Gudrun, and makes an impression. Her family plots to have Sigurd marry Gudrun.
Section VIII: Brynhild Betrayed
Brynhild is forced into marrying and tricked into marrying Gunnar rather than Sigurd.
Section IX: Strife
The deceit is revealed during a quarrel and the ensuing strife leads to Sigurd’s death.
The short prose prefaces to each section are by Tolkien himself and help to follow the plot, where the poetry is allusive. Some help with vocabulary, if needed, as well as discussion of the relation of Tolkien's text to his Scandinavian sources is found in the commentary, with Christopher Tolkien sometimes quoting substantial amounts of Tolkien's own opinions on these texts.
