This is a riddle I came up with for the Dec. 5th prompt, and Dawn said I should post it here. (Some of you may already have seen it from my posting it on my own DW yesterday.) Comments are screened for now, but I'll say if anyone gets it right.
The answer to this riddle is something that is mentioned at least once in the text of J.R.R. Tolkien's books set in Middle-earth (meaning here The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, and the Hobbit), but also appears without being explicitly mentioned. :)
Riddle
I am a strange bird: leave me alone in the wood and I make no sound, pluck me and I sing happily. I often go over a bridge, but seldom under it. Cut me in half and I will leap higher! I must be stretched, but not broken. What am I?
