August 2012 Newsletter Posted!

Once again, August is our annual Akallabeth in August challenge! While the First Age gets lots of love from the Silmfic community, we sometimes overlook the high drama and intriguing characters from the Second Age. During August, we encourage our members to show the Second Age a little love by either trying their hands at a Second Age story, poem, essay, or work of art or reading some of the excellent Second Age work already on our archive. Our newsletter includes a list of all the Second Age work on our archive. (I hope! We sort through a lot of stories to make this list each year, so if you spot one we've missed, please drop a line to me or my comods so we can fix it.)
In honor of Akallabeth in August, Oshun has written a truly fascinating biography of Erendis, whose story (along with that of her husband, Aldarion) is told in Unfinished Tales. This is one of Tolkien's most fascinating love stories, as it breaks the mold from his other more idealistic tales in some very notable ways. Oshun did an excellent job on this biography--I think it is one of her finest, and that is saying something given the consistently high quality of her work--so I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to learn more about this not-so-minor minor character from the Second Age.
We're also adding something new to our Around the World and Web section this month. In addition to announcements from groups outside of the SWG, we will be linking to articles, posts, and discussions that might be of interest to the Tolkien fanfic community. We have our first set of links up this month, and we would really like to expand this! We encourage you all to send us links to interesting articles, posts, and discussions that you may find online. If you write a post that is related to Tolkien or the Tolkien fandom, please let us know so that we can link to it.
And, of course, we have a list of all of the stories updated or added during the month of July. The "Of All That Remains" challenge continues, along with Akallabeth in August, and we have a new Quote of the Month as well.
Lots of hands went into making this newsletter happen, so a huge thanks to Oshun, Rhapsody, Russandol, and Angelica, who write and compile the content in the newsletter every month!
