October 2013 Newsletter Posted!
Oct. 2nd, 2013 07:51 pmThe October newsletter has been posted!
http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/news/newsletter.php
We have a couple pieces of important group news this month. Firstly, if you met your goal for the Season of Writing Dangerously, please don't forget to claim your prize! (Links and details can be found in the newsletter.) If you'd like to help create stories and art for our SoWD winners--whether or not you participated yourself--please stop by the winner's page and claim a challenge or two and brighten someone's day!
We also have several issues up for discussion. We are in the process of setting up a Tumblr "satellite" for the SWG and welcome volunteers familiar with Tumblr who would like to help our Tumblr-illiterate moderator team get this off the ground. We are also undertaking revisions and additions to our Site Etiquette and FAQs in two key areas: our image use policy and our policy on multiple accounts. We are seeking member comments, concerns, and questions through October 15. Again, the newsletter has all of the relevant links.
Onto more exciting stuff--this month's character biography, in honor of October and Halloween, documents a character involved in one of Tolkien's scariest tales: Edrahil. Edrahil followed Finrod and Beren into the dungeons of Sauron (and eventually the belly of a werewolf!) in a story of doomed heroism typical of the First Age. As well as a lively recounting of this episode and speculation about Edrahil's role at various points throughout, Oshun shares information she gathered about the origin of the name Edrahil that might illuminate this minor character even further. As always engaging and educational, Oshun's biography of Edrahil deserves a read!
Continuing the spooky theme, the Featured Podfic returns this month with Oshun's creepily comic piece "Do You Believe in Ghosts?" Amrod and Amras may come to rue their request to sleep in the back garden when they get to hear all the mysterious noises that fill the nights in Valinor.
If you're looking for something to read, we had quite a number of stories added and updated on the archive last month! If you're looking for something to write, we introduce a new challenge this month that asks you to write about a turning point in the life of a character and are revisiting the "Nature of Fear" challenge in honor of Halloween. And, finally, our Around the World and Web section includes articles and announcements from beyond the SWG.
As always, the newsletter would not be possible without the wonderful volunteers who create content for it (and therefore reduce me to the role of editor and coder! :) Many thanks to Oshun, Rhapsody, Russandol, and Angelica for their help on this month's newsletter.
