Our December 2013 newsletter has been posted here:

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/news/december2013.php

We have a lot to offer this month! Silver Trails has authored this month's biography about the characters Makar and Measse, who made their brief--but fascinating--appearance in The Book of Lost Tales. These characters represent a melding of Tolkien's legendarium with the Norse myths in a way that Tolkien kept only briefly before eliminating Makar and Measse entirely from the story. Silver Trails surveys what we know about these two characters, as well as the reason for their disappearance from the story.

Our Featured Podfic this month is the "The Scent of Old Books" by downtide, read by Tanis. Maedhros and Fingon meet in a modern-day AU setting based on a real English bookshop. This is a lovely story beautifully read by Tanis.

In news this month, we have lots going on as we prepare to move into the SWG's ninth (yes, I know ... o.O) year. First of all, we have been planning and working with a lovely group of volunteers for some months now to set up and draft guidelines for a satellite group on Tumblr. At last, our labors have paid off, and the SWG tumblr is open for business! (Follow us here: http://www.tumblr.com/follow/silmarillionwritersguild) We are accepting submissions of "SSPs" (links to your own stories that you'd like to promote), links to articles of interest to Silm fans, and fandom-related announcements. We will also post SWG-related announcements here. We also continue to seek more recommendations for our Featured Podfic (as well as readers!), and we are gearing up for another Back to Middle-earth Month this March and seek moderators and volunteers.

If you're looking for something to read, the newsletter also contains a list of the stories posted to and updated on our archive during November, as well as several articles of interest. If you're looking for something to write, we continue our Turning Point challenge this month and, as we do annually, invite our members to write stories as gifts to those who have influenced them as fans and writers. We also have announcements from groups beyond the SWG.

As always, the newsletter is made possible by the efforts of many volunteers. Thanks this month go to Silver Trails, Tanis, downtide, Rhapsody, Russandol, and Angelica for their contributions!

Happy reading! :)
