Type of Fanwork: Drabble
Length (if applicable): 132 words
Rating: General
Warnings: none
Summary: In the beginning of time he sings alone, and even when the voices of all his kin are joined in joyous harmony, for a time Manwë continues to sing alone.
Why I enjoyed it (optional): I wrote it (shameless self-promotion here)

zdenka: Miriam with a tambourine, text "I will sing." (Music)
From: [personal profile] zdenka
I'm not entirely sure this is a fanwork, but I wanted to share some pieces of Classical music in connection to the Ainulindale discussion, and Lyra was kind enough to say it was okay to link that here. Like Ainulindale, Handel's "Ode for Saint Cecilia's Day" describes the universe being created through music, and Haydn's oratorio The Creation is a musical depiction of that process. Three excerpts in my LJ here.

Now something that definitely is a fanwork: [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath's "The History of Middle-earth: Chibi Version."
The comics can be found by clicking the homecv tag in [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath's LJ and going back to the beginning of the series, but if you haven't read them before, probably the easiest way is to download the PDF of the first 90 strips here.
Type of Fanwork: computer-generated comics
Length (if applicable): 91 installments and still going (but don't be put off by the length! They're comics. You can read each one in a few seconds.)
Rating: not rated by author
Warnings: content warnings as in canon, plus cartoon gore and non-sexual nudity
Summary: A tongue-in-cheek but canon-accurate depiction in cartoon form of the first part of the Silmarillion, starting with Ainulindale and (so far) going through the arrival of the Elves in Valinor. The series also incorporates a lot of stuff from the History of Middle-earth volumes edited by Christopher Tolkien, but I haven't read all of HoMe and I didn't have a problem following the story.
Why I enjoyed it (optional): The Silmarillion told in chibi cartoons! How is this not awesome?

Title: Morning People
Author: Huinare
Type of Fanwork: Fiction
Length (if applicable): 1482 words
Rating: General
Warnings: None
Summary: Yet none ever guessed Sauron's true reason for turning to the will of Melkor.
Why I enjoyed it (optional): Very funny! More or less crack, but extremely well told from Sauron's POV.

Title: Chosen
Author: Pandemonium
Type of Fanwork: Fiction
Length (if applicable): 654 words
Rating: General
Warnings: None
Summary: When the Voice of the One names the ruler of the Guardians of Arda, the decision results in dismay and discord by another who believes he should have been chosen. A re-interpretation of the Ainulindalë myth.
Why I enjoyed it (optional) : One of a series of interesting AUs by Pandemonium (loosely in a science-fiction frame work). This one won a first place in the MEFAs.

Psst, the first link goes to the SWG main page. But that made me want to read it, so I looked it up. (Let's see if my comment gets marked as spam now.) This one, I think?

For kicks or for those who can use this sort of thing (like me), the Gwaith-i-pethdain (http://www.elvish.org/gwaith/) offers a (Neo-)Quenya translation of the complete Valaquenta text both in Roman letters and in Tengwar. The document also contains artwork, manuscripts and an essay, which I cannot read because it's in Polish, but I'm sure it's very nice. (The Gwaith page says that there is going to be an English version "soon", but it's been saying that since AT LEAST 2009, so, yeah.)

This isn't flawless -- they completely ignored the fact that some Quenya words, although commonly transcribed with an "s", should really be written using the thúle Tengwa (see, folks, and this is why Fëanor was right! ;)). Or those that are transcribed with an "n" or "nw" and should nonetheless use noldo rather than númen. So if you want to use this as a basis for your own Quenya manuscript or something (like yours truly (http://oloriel.livejournal.com/pics/catalog/2721)), tread with care. I didn't because I only noticed it after a while, and now I'm stuck with an error-riddled manuscript, which bothers me to no end.

But still, it's an impressive effort, and aside from the "spell-checking" issues provides a useful basis for various nerdy enterprises. ;)

Title: Valaquenta in Neo-Quenya -- download .zip document here (http://home.agh.edu.pl/~evermind/mathom/vq_vinyaquenyasse.zip)
Type of Fanwork: Translation/Essay/Manuscript
Length (if applicable): n/a
Rating: n/a
Warnings: occasionally, wrong choice of Tengwar, grr!
Summary: Well, it's the Valaquenta. In Quenya.
Why I enjoyed it (optional): Because I love "back-translations", and I swear one day I'll finish my manuscript and have my very own Elvish Valaquenta, mwahahah! (I've been saying that since 2009, too. >_>)

Awesome, both the translation and your manuscripts. Learning Quenya is one of those projects that will have to wait until I retire. I keep making feeble attempts but never break through the pain barrier. Thanks for sharing!

Title: The Web of the World by Dwimordene
Type of Fanwork: Fiction, Experimental
Length (if applicable): 358 words
Rating: General
Warnings: None
Summary: "Vairë the Weaver [...] weaves all things that have ever been in Time into her storied webs [...]" - "Valaquenta", Silmarillion
It is hard to love the world that is. Nevertheless, someone has to do it...
Why I enjoyed it (optional): Dwimordene has written interestingly about a number of the Valar, including Nienna and Nessa, also about Melkor. This one about Vaire is probably my favourite. It also sheds an interesting light on Ungoliant.
