When I first read the Silm a decade ago (and being unaware of the earlier version), that phrase didn't bother me
Yeah, me too. I'm way more sensitive to this kind of thing now than I used to be. I'm not sure if it's just that I'm older (quite possible) or that discussion of consent issues has become more mainstream in the last decade. Either way, our perspective on this stuff is pretty far removed from the context in which Tolkien was writing.
