Obviously, Philosopher-At-Large's "A Boy, A Girl And A Dog", otherwise known as "The Leithian Script". Massive, modern-English retelling of the Whole Thing as a film script. Found here: http://rustbucket.net/leithian/

Extremely convincing characterisation, tremendous world-building, and a huge depth of thought and analysis. One of, if not the definitive fanworks on this subject.
