From December 2014 until November 2015, I ran an online survey of readers and writers of Tolkien-based fan fiction. With my MA now firmly behind me, I have begun to crunch and share the data. It is my hope to do a roundup of posts and discussions related to my survey data here, about once per month or so. If you want more regular updates, you can follow my blog The Heretic Loremaster via RSS feed here on LJ at [livejournal.com profile] heretic_lore*, under the tolkien fan fiction survey tag over on Tumblr, or by following me on Twitter.

*This is a good time for a friendly reminder: Please don't comment on [livejournal.com profile] heretic_lore on LJ. It is an RSS feed, not a journal. I don't even know why comments are allowed, but I do not get them, I do not check them, and posts eventually self-delete and the comments are lost forever. If you have something to say, please click the link and comment on the Heretic Loremaster post itself.

Here is the introductory post for the survey results. It includes background on the survey, terms of use, and a master list of posts. It's a good starting point.

During the month of May, I investigated the demographics of the Tolkien fanfic community. I explored three topics in three posts this month:

Tolkien Fan Fiction Survey: Reader, Writer, or Both? An overwhelming majority of survey participants read Tolkien fanfic while only 61.0% were writers. Some other findings: Women were slightly less likely to be writers, older fans were slightly more likely to be writers, and writers left feedback at a much higher rate than non-writers. Gender in the Tolkien Fan Fiction Community. Just as popular knowledge would predict, most participants (88.5%) identified as women, and men were a small minority (3.61%). The stereotype of slash as a women's genre is not so accurate, however, and nonbinary participants were much more likely than women and men to view social justice as a motive for fanfic. We're Not Just Teenagers: Tolkien Fandom Participant Age. Just what is says on the tin. Most Tolkien fanfic participants are in their twenties, but our fandom tends to be older than fandom in general and tends to retain older fans more than fandom as a whole (according to one survey anyway). Older fans are also more likely to be monofandom and more likely to have conservative motives for writing fanfic ... although as the discussion shows, this is far from a simple conclusion! This is the newest post and discussion is currently active, so please jump in! Read the full post here.
