SWG January 2018 Challenge New Years Resolution

How many of you made New Year's resolutions about your writing or art? How many of you would like to make more time for writing or be more productive?

As we start another year of SWG challenges, we encourage you to begin another year of creative accomplishment on the right foot. For our first challenge of 2018, participants can choose to complete any of the previous year's challenges. Did you miss a challenge you wanted to complete? Do it now. Did you start a fanwork for a challenge but never completed it? Here is your chance to finish. If you didn't leave any unrealized or unfinished projects behind you (congratulations!), choose from any of 2017's prompts and start the year by creating a new fanwork.

You will receive a stamp on your 2017 collection for any 2017 challenges that you complete now, as well as a stamp for this challenge on your 2018 collection. When you post to the SWG archive, please make sure you select the 2017 challenge you're completing and the New Year's Resolution challenge.

In order to receive a stamp for your fanwork, your response must be posted to the archive on or before 10 February 2018.

2017 Challenges
The listing and complete guidelines for the 2017 challenges are available here.

January | Taboo
Choose at least one prompt from a taboo-themed bingo card.

February | Revolution
Authors will receive a quotation, artwork, speech, or song concerned with protest and revolution; comment on our LiveJournal or Dreamwidth, send our tumblr an ask, or email us to receive your prompt. Artists should make a piece of protest art.

March | Strength and Beauty
Create a fanwork about the following prompt. You may use any part or all of the quote.

"Real strength never impairs beauty or harmony,
but it often bestows it; and in everything imposingly beautiful,
strength has much to do with the magic."
~Herman Melville, Moby Dick

April | A Woman's Sceptre
Each participant will receive a quote from a woman who has advanced the cause of women's rights or participation of women in the arts. Your response does not have to be about a female character. Comment on our LiveJournal or Dreamwidth, send our tumblr an ask, or email us to receive your prompt.

May | The Hero's Journey
This month's challenge is a Matryoshka challenge with prompts based on the theme of the hero's journey archetype. See this post if you don't know how a Matryoshka challenge works. If you want to participate, please let us know whether you would like an easy (3 prompts), medium (5 prompts), or difficult (7 prompts) challenge. Comment on our LiveJournal or Dreamwidth, send our tumblr an ask, or email us to receive your prompts.

June | New Directions
From our list of character biographies, choose someone that you do not know much about or have not written/drawn before. Read the character biography and create a fanwork about that character.

July | Just an Old-Fashioned Love Song
Use a popular love song as a prompt to inspire a fanwork about romantic or sexual love. Choose your own prompt form the list here.

August | Song of Exile
Create a fanwork about exile or exiles. Find more specific member-submitted prompts here.

September | Ancestors
Create a fanwork in which a character's resemblance or connection to an ancestor plays a central role.

October | Behind the Scenes
Create a fanwork that shows what a character who was not involved in the major event was doing at the time it was taking place. The character may be canon or original. The event may impact your character later on in time, but in the moment when your story takes place, your character(s) has no idea what is happening.

November/December | 30-Day Character Study
Choose one character whom you want to study deeply and complete prompts and activities designed around developing a deeper understanding of that character. Prompts aren't only writing, and one does not have to complete them all. You may complete one prompt or all thirty. Find the prompts and more on how to claim your progress here.

You don't know how happy I am to see this challenge. Maybe I can finish one of last year's prompts, at least!

Much appreciated!
Whether I can actually finish anything this month is another question, but I do want to continue working on what I started.

Looking forward to see what other people do, too (including, maybe, one of those stories you started!)
