The SWG is widely known for its Story Archive but there is also References. This section is central to our view of fandom since it embodies some of the most relevant purposes of our group as stated in our Mission: Knowledge:To create a reliable set of references to aid others wishing to learn more about Tolkien's works, the craft of writing, and fandom culture. Through these references, we seek also to encourage readers new to The Silmarillion to understand the beauty and wonder of this book that has captivated us and Understanding. To strive toward a better understanding of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and our relationships to those works. Through our writings and discussions, we aim to encourage thoughtful assessments of canon, as well as the fandom culture in which our study and creativity occurs, and the intersection of the two.
To that purpose we have set up a Reference Library to collect and showcase works that provide reliable information on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, the craft of writing, and the fandom culture, as well as other topics that we feel would be of interest to our members and guests. We aim for our Reference Library to become known as a place to acquire reliable, enlightening, and entertaining secondary sources on subjects of interest to SWG members and fandom members at large.
In the Library you can find essays that have passed our review process intended only to assure that references meet the SWG's standards for source citation, reliability, and grammar and usage before publication. It is not intended to favor or disfavor a particular interpretation, opinion, or viewpoint.
Among these essays you can find explorations of masculinity in Tolkien's works, the stars of Middle-earth, how the differences among Elvish cultures are revealed by their names, studies of the characters of Finarfin and Nerdanel, Anglo-Saxon influences on the Silmarillion, the relation of Tokien with science and a very useful chronology of the Silmarillion.
Relating to the craft of writing, there are also essays dealing with reviewing and the phenomenon of "Mary Sue" in fanfiction.
Our Reference Library also contains Periodicals: documents written as part of the monthly newsletter or other SWG projects and collected here in order to make them all available in one place. Because these references are produced under much stricter time constraints than the references in the main library, then it is usually not possible to follow the usual peer-review process.
In this section you can find the well-known Character of the Month Biographies and Linguistic Foolery; there are also summaries of the Silmarillion and and ongoing project attempting to summarize the History of Middle-earth series
into easy-to-follow summaries. There is also A Sense of History where our real-world history is related to Tolkien's writings.
As is the case with the Library of Tirion, we would like to emphasize that all sections of our Reference library are ongoing projects and so open to all authors interested in collaborating. We invite them to consider submitting their work to the SWG Reference Library, either essays or material to be included in the Periodicals. We also encourage all SWG members to become reference readers in charge of the review process of submitted essays (believe us: it's a lot of fun!).
