I think that Miriel's sort of the "They may exist, but that's no reason for me to believe in them" person. I'm not sure it would be possible to be an atheist in Arda, unless one happens to be in the very far east-- since religion is mostly a matter of what one was brought up to believe, and the Elves never had a problem with religion, and even the Numenoreans only disliked the Valar, and never doubted their existance. Miriel might be a special case: after all, she was brought up by Tar-Palantir, who was a stickler for religion; but my version of Miriel sees problems in her father's policies (was there ever a king so out of touch with his people as Tar-Palantir was?), and therefore is rather sceptical of her own upbringing.
