I knew it was a good idea to click the link and read your words on Fingolfin. You sum up that which makes him an exceptional character very well. Take this from one who is completely obsessed and totally partial to Feanor. But even crazy fangirl me can take a step back and give Fingolfin credit for everything that he is. Incidentally, the bit with "Thou shall lead and I will follow" is my most favorite part of the Silmarillion, not only because Feanor is in it, but because he gets a lesson in what he should be like, right then and there.
I would add to everything that you said the fact that Fingolfin could have been severely embittered by the fact that Finwe always favored his first born. Yet he wasn't. I think that he admired his brother and cared for him, even though his very existence must have annoyed Feanor to no end at times.
