Title: Another Man's Cage--Chapter One
Author: Dawn Felagund

Rating: General
Warnings: Non-canon characters and situations are presented over the course of the story. In this chapter, I am only guilty of being liberal with the canon and a little bit of suggestive talk from Fëanor.
Genre: General fiction
Summary: Another Man's Cage is a novel-length story set in the Age of the Trees in Valinor. Chapter One follows a young Tyelkormo (Celegorm) through an ordinary day at his home in Tirion. Other starring characters include Maedhros and Caranthir.

Another Man's Cage began as an attempt to understand what changed Fëanor and his sons from kind and decent Elves and into the monsters they later became. I began with Celegorm (Tyelkormo) because he is generally regarded as the most ruthless of Fëanor's sons, and so I thought him the greatest challenge. As the story evolved, more voices spoke and it grew to formidable length. Although it is still unfinished, Another Man's Cage is nearing completion and is already a novel-length work.

I have taken the perspective, for this piece, that The Silmarillion is a historical work penned by an author who lived through the age I describe (Pengolodh). As such, The Silmarillion is subject to historical bias and the prejudices of its author. Because Pengolodh was loyal to Turgon--who made no effort to hide his hate of the Fëanorians after their actions led to his wife's death--it is safe to assume that his perspective is likely skewed. While I try to stick as closely to canon as possible, I do not dismiss the idea that the private lives and ideals of the Fëanorians were very different from what Pengolodh would have perceived (and conveyed) and, indeed, what is often portrayed in fan fictions about them.

Readers should be aware that, because the story is set in Valinor, that character names are in Quenya. I have posted a listing of these names in my LiveJournal, available through the "Related Links" section of this posting. Author's notes where I attempt to explain my rationale behind the idiosyncracies in my tale are also available here.

I am interested in all comments--both good and bad--that readers can provide. Because the story changed from a short character study to a full-length fiction, I had to do some extensive revisions, including overhauling the tense to put it all in present tense. If you notice tense glitches or other errors, I would appreciate it if you'd let me know.
Happy reading and best wishes!
