A stereotype is a generalization, usually exaggerated or oversimplified and often offensive, used to describe a group. Think about a group that you identify with, either in
your real life or in Tolkien's works, and write down at least three stereotypes that do or might exist about that group.
Write a story, poem or create an artwork where characters break stereotypes. |

Date: 2009-03-18 09:42 pm (UTC)I'm glad you (and others) like the icon. It's very different from what you and Rhapsy have done so far, and I wasn't sure if that was a good or a bad thing. It is also my first ever animated icon. (I will slow down the animation for you, too, later. I wasn't sure of the speed; since I know what it says, it is very hard to judge. I should probably get in the habit of asking Bobby in the future.) I have been meaning to learn to do animated GIFs for years and finally did! (That's ridiculous, I know, considering how easy it is.)
Yes, I have read my share of Elven badfic, slash and otherwise. ;) Although I've never encountered a story with parenthetical translations, although I hear that they exist. I'm still looking.
Irredeemable - by Dwim
Date: 2009-03-17 04:39 am (UTC)Summary: The orc who swallowed a sword and coughed up a soul.
(I also love that icon and if I had a journal, I would take it for my icon collection.)
Re: Irredeemable - by Dwim
Date: 2009-03-18 09:45 pm (UTC)And thanks on the icon! It was my first animated one, so I'm all proud of it and such. *polishes* Also, those fine drawings in the background? All mine too. ;)
Now everyone knows why I'm a fan writer!
Re: Irredeemable - by Dwim
Date: 2009-03-19 02:23 am (UTC)I spent some time trying to come up with something in keeping with the tone of the piece, and after getting a consistent mental blank or melodramatic crap, decided, "Screw it - go for the incongruous Rudyard Kipling-esque thing."
Also, those fine drawings in the background? All mine too. ;)
So I gather that Pengolodh will never have illuminations featuring animals and people, then...? ;-)

Re: Irredeemable - by Dwim
Date: 2009-03-22 12:37 am (UTC)Oh, is it that terribly obvious that drawing humans is not my forte? ;)
It certainly suits me as a student of medieval illumination since representations of space aliens frequently look more human than many medieval "people" on manuscripts. (I just spent the afternoon at the Walters Art Gallery with my teacher, giggling over baby-Jesus-with-the-receding-hairline and Hellraiser-meets-Virgin-Mary.) My teacher frequently reassures new students, "You can't draw people? Don't worry--they couldn't either!"
However, I think the Noldorin illuminators probably did better than that. So, yes, I suspect that Pengolodh's illuminations will probably include lots of gilded flowers, geometric designs, and knotwork patterns, coincidentally all things that Dawn is good at! ;)

Thank you. It's very different from what you and Oshun have done because I have no talent for making pretty icons. But silly? I can do that! ;)

Date: 2009-03-19 02:48 pm (UTC)Its immensely original and those drawings (the hobbit one is so cheerful!), the three of us have created a bunch of gorgeous icons that's for sure!

Date: 2009-03-18 09:51 pm (UTC)We need Heretic Geek shinies! We do! I don't have the talent to make them, but I'm officially making big soulful eyes in the direction of anyone that does.

Date: 2009-03-17 10:58 pm (UTC)I will have you know that Aragorn is not representational of all men! Denethor is excessively well-groomed, and Faramir and Eowyn make good use of Henneth Annun's fountains for bathing purposes. (Though on second thought, that may not be wholly about cleanliness...)
*ahem*
I took on a totally different mannish stereotype, one that I've struggled with. I'm sure that even within the same kingdom there would be regional stereotypes. :-) Here we have Ioreth, having a not-so-great day.

Date: 2009-03-18 10:02 pm (UTC)Bwahaha! I wondered who would be the first person to take offense at her favored race's stereotypes. :D If it's any consolation, they also got stuck with heroic. ;)
I love your story and think you're doing a good job with the dialect. I always find that vocabulary and grammar more than spelling create a character's voice for me in dialogue, and you did really well with this. I do find that, when cutting out parts of words, it helps me not to have the apostrophe to indicate the missing bit. It seems to draw my attention more to the fact that the word is in dialect than the sound of the word. Of course, that is my experience alone; I have no idea if it applies to one other person than myself! :)
I recently wrote a poem in dialect. It was hard! It's hard to know when you might be overdoing it or not doing enough. So I applaud you for this story! :)

featuring two original characters, one gondorian, one rohirrim. You can guess what kind of stereotypes I worked with, hehehe :-D

He did not even smell of horse that she could tell.
gave me a good laugh! :D
Also, I give Branwen a lot of credit. My husband does armor-smithing and, much as I would love to do it too, I suspect that it is beyond my capabilities. Those huge hammers ... *ai!*

And thanks for the compliment on the icon! It was a lot of fun to make. (Also, my first animated!) I'm so pleased that people liked it. :)

Date: 2009-03-22 12:58 am (UTC)Then I read your note at the end. ;) We have had the privilege of seeing them play live twice, once at Celtic Fling and again at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire and ... OME, there is nothing quite like sitting where the drums seem to make the air itself tremble around you, feeling as though the players are pouring out every bit of hurt and rage into their instruments. It's just an incredible experience.
And you captured this beautifully in this story and the rawness of the emotion that they are all feeling, all without being sentimental or melodramatic. I was mesmerized. This is an excellent story; I'm glad you decided to go running with the muses! :)

Date: 2009-04-13 02:24 pm (UTC)You are welcome to write for the prompts and use the icons and banners for as long as you'd like. :) The only thing on which we've placed a time constraint is on the "marathon," for people who want to write all 31, because I don't want to be tracking it and sending out marathon banners forevermore. But the individual icons and banners are good indefinitely. :)
And I love your warnings! That gave me a good laugh.

Date: 2009-04-13 06:08 pm (UTC)I would not trouble yourself over when you get to the other story. I didn't expect you to read it; truly I don't mind. I know how it is, and to be honest, I don't think there is enough time to read everything.
Thanks for reading. I'm rather fond of the 'verse in question here for its happy-go-lucky grafting of the word 'elf' onto any story I chose to tell, the addition of a couple of trees, and hey presto not-Tolkien-fanfic *g* This 'verse lost the toss for editing time, so I posted it as a.u. in fine, fanon tradition. Happy, early, clueless days.
Kind of you to read and comment, which I appreciate. Thanks for that and the chance of the icon :)
