Day Twenty

We all have experienced this. Due to illness, a family event, work, you didn't have as much time to study for an important test as you needed or finish a project you promised to do. Think of a specific event that you went through of which you felt unprepared for and write briefly about the preparation that you were able to do, the reasons that you didn't get to prepare as well as you wanted, and of course, the outcome. Write a story, poem or create a piece of art where a character is unprepared.

A few reminders ...

If a particular prompt isn't speaking to you, and you're trying to go for all thirty-one, remember that you can substitute one of the Mercurial Monday prompts that you chose not to do for any other prompt in the challenge. So, for example, if you chose "Tedious Work" for Day Two, if you write something for "Great Danger" for Day Two as well, that second story can count for any prompt that you don't feel inspired to do.

All of the entries created so far for which we have links can be found here. I added a lot of new ones tonight, so we are close to--if we haven't exceeded already--200 entries. (Wow!)

Old prompts are here as well. You have as long as you'd like to write for prompts, though if you're going for the thirty-one-day marathon, we do ask that you try to finish by mid-April so that we're not handing out banners till the Eighth Age of Arda! :)

Yay! \0/ I think after 19's prompt (which I think just about everyone found difficult), then an easy one was due. :)

This was excellent--unprepared, yet not. And it has suspense! I felt for Bergil in having to explain himself to his father.

Thanks, Dawn! I'm glad it worked for you. Explaining things to parents... sometimes, even now, some things are hard to say. I imagine that the consequences of Beregond's actions wouldeventually have to be discussed between them. Anyway, it was a fun prompt to work with.

Thanks so much for all your kind comments to my posts. I am sorry I have done such a bad job of replying--I have been so focused on trying to come up with stories in the little time I've had these days that I have been a very bad reply-er. After the month is over, I will just sit back and read through all the entries; they have all been fabulous!

I'm, um, a little ashamed at how dark this one came out. But I've been reading _The Hobbit_ and this is the first idea that jumped to mind.

Summary: "So the rumour of the wealth of Erebor spread abroad and reached the ears of the dragons, and at last Smaug the Golden, greatest of the dragons of his day, arose and without warning came against King Thrór and descended on the Mountain in flames."

Well, this reader is never disappointed to find stories that are dark. ;) And I think this might even be my first ever Hobbit fanfic! :) What struck me the most was the emotional honesty of Balin's jealousy that so many of the King's household survived where his did not. And that last scene, where he discovers the extent of the destruction ... wow. Unprepared indeed! Very nicely written.

Wow, this is really, really cool. I know that doesn't do it justice! :D But when you said "100-word sentence," I thought, "Okay, not too hard to write one of those (I wouldn't be surprised if I had some 200-word sentences floating around in some of my stories)," but I love how you've used the concept here as you have, to illustrate Turin's life. I don't know how you keep dreaming up these inventive and gorgeous drabbles, but I am so impressed ... and so enjoying them! :)

thank you so much! i'm somewhat overwhelmed by the positive feedback i've been getting - thank you so much for your lovely words. i find they spur me on to write more. as for this drabble, i have to say that i got some childish glee out of constructing it like this, even if it is a bit gimicky.
