According to the Romans, the basic principle of the law is that agreements should be respected under all circumstances. Do you agree with this? Is there a time in your life when you had to break this principle? When someone broke an agreement with you?
Now write a story, poem or create an artwork where characters are forced to break this principle. |

Melkor
In the Singing, he rose in brassy pride, and she wailed her tear-shroud song, lamenting:
Ah! Thou sad sublime, my lovèd!
In Time, he'll ask forgiveness; she'll loving give it. He'll ask aid; she'll trusting furnish forth. When, after many betrayals, he is cast into Night, still he calls, and she answers: Patience!
Patience. He is her torment, her trial, her temperer – tempter-teacher, crying: O thou inconsolate, grieve me no more!
He is her Brother Far-fall, to whom she unrelenting faithful gives her name:
I am Mourning, thy heart's guard, and thou shalt never lift my veil!

Date: 2009-03-23 04:24 am (UTC)Heh heh. "Nice" meaning "I'm biting my tongue and sitting on my hands so as not to reach through the page and shake someone until s/he explains this", I take it.
I'd totally forgotten about the incident until I began combing back through the early parts of the Silmarillion for information on Nienna in November, and this point stood out as in need of being probed for sense.
I love the poetic feel, especially the alliteration near the end.
Thanks! Nienna deserves a little alliteration in her verses. ;-) I'm really glad you like how I've been interpreting her, Dawn. Thanks for commenting!

Date: 2009-03-24 04:11 pm (UTC)That's good to know. I'm aiming for a more poetic style, but I have no intention of following a specific poetic meter or rhyme schema or anything of that sort.
it reads like they are answering pleas from each other
Definitely - what I wanted, especially in the last lines, was that this is a dialogue and a very personal one.
Thanks for your feedback - I'm glad you liked the drabble, Ledys!

Date: 2009-03-23 05:19 am (UTC)Do you want the short or long answer to this? Keep in mind that I put off writing my draft syllabus for a philosophical ethics course (I don't teach til next fall, but it's for a teacher training course now), in favor of writing this.
Regardless of my thoughts, Maedhros has his own unique take on the matter.
