Day Twenty-Two

Day 22 Icon According to the Romans, the basic principle of the law is that agreements should be respected under all circumstances. Do you agree with this? Is there a time in your life when you had to break this principle? When someone broke an agreement with you?

Now write a story, poem or create an artwork where characters are forced to break this principle.

Summary: Love does not suffer laws.

Dwim

Melkor

In the Singing, he rose in brassy pride, and she wailed her tear-shroud song, lamenting:

Ah! Thou sad sublime, my lovèd!

In Time, he'll ask forgiveness; she'll loving give it. He'll ask aid; she'll trusting furnish forth. When, after many betrayals, he is cast into Night, still he calls, and she answers: Patience!

Patience. He is her torment, her trial, her temperer – tempter-teacher, crying: O thou inconsolate, grieve me no more!

He is her Brother Far-fall, to whom she unrelenting faithful gives her name:

I am Mourning, thy heart's guard, and thou shalt never lift my veil!

[Nienna's forgiveness of Melkor has] always been one of those head-scratchers for me, which I've always chalked up to the ways of the Valar being sometimes difficult to understand. To be nice about it.

Heh heh. "Nice" meaning "I'm biting my tongue and sitting on my hands so as not to reach through the page and shake someone until s/he explains this", I take it.

I'd totally forgotten about the incident until I began combing back through the early parts of the Silmarillion for information on Nienna in November, and this point stood out as in need of being probed for sense.

I love the poetic feel, especially the alliteration near the end.

Thanks! Nienna deserves a little alliteration in her verses. ;-) I'm really glad you like how I've been interpreting her, Dawn. Thanks for commenting!

This was awesome. I love the way this reads: like a poem, yet not, if that makes sense. To me, it reads like they are answering pleas from each other--the way the ideas are developed in short "bursts" of feeling is very appropriate. That's my way of saying that I loved it. Great job!

That's good to know. I'm aiming for a more poetic style, but I have no intention of following a specific poetic meter or rhyme schema or anything of that sort.

Definitely - what I wanted, especially in the last lines, was that this is a dialogue and a very personal one.

Thanks for your feedback - I'm glad you liked the drabble, Ledys!

Here is my attempt for today which is a little long to post here.

That was wonderful, Linda! I loved the ending: keeping with the spirit of the law if not the letter. It was awesome to get a peek at Aragorn as he decides on matters of state and to know what kind of leader he is going to be for people in Gondor. Great job!

According to the Romans, the basic principle of the law is that agreements should be respected under all circumstances. Do you agree with this?

Do you want the short or long answer to this? Keep in mind that I put off writing my draft syllabus for a philosophical ethics course (I don't teach til next fall, but it's for a teacher training course now), in favor of writing this.

Regardless of my thoughts, Maedhros has his own unique take on the matter.

I loved what you did with this, Marta, especially Maedhros' thoughts on government and why the right did not belong to him. It was a great answer to the prompt.

And I have to quickly comment--I did not know that you were a professor! How fun! And a lot of work I'm sure; good luck writing your syllabus, and good luck teaching the class. Those students will be lucky to have you :-)

I'm not one - yet. But these days those basic courses are often taught by us lowly grad students, and I teach my first next fall. I do want to be one eventually.

Thanks for the good luck. It actually went fine.

Thank you! It's been interesting working with them, since I randomly skip around how old they are. (And you can always improve!)
