Title: Killing Melkor

Summary: Not actually a story but asking for advice and help.

Hi, I'm actually Annatar pasting for my part in the Gondolin RPG. I'm thinking about killing Morgoth in the following manner and need to know how successful I'm likely to be and the consequences of my actions. I have several thoughts on the matter, of course, but I need more feedback:

To gain domination over Arda, Melkor let most of his being pass into the physical constituents of the earth. He became permanently 'incarnate,' and for this reason he seeks to avoid any kind of injury to his true form. With the destruction of his assumed bodily form, he would dwindle in force. His diminished spirit would be forced into the Void and be trapped there until the End of the World. I've figured out a way to kill Melkor. I will become a great flame that consumes Melkor.

I don't think it's possible, sorry. He's a true immortal. There is no indication anywhere in Tolkien's works that spirit can be permanently destroyed, and indeed this would have been utterly contrary to his religion, which informed all his writings. HoME states that spirit can't even be coerced. It can be deeply reduced, like Sauron after the Hobbit Incident, but not destroyed. Presumably the One could do it, as Melkor's original creator, but not anything or anyone else. (ALso, literal flame is a material phenomenon and doesn't affect spirit.

If you were really trying to stick it to the Valar, the best way would be to rule so well that everyone prefers your rule to theirs. You know, long lives, no illnesses, no crop failures, reliable and incorrupt justice, peace and security to the degree that gold-laden virgins can gad about at will unmolested physically or financially. Within a generation or two your subjects would forget all about the Valar and the One and worship you sincerely and unreservedly and happily volunteer for your armies of conquest in order to spread the Way of Melkor throughout Middle-earth.
