March 10: Gondolin

Come escape to the Hidden City, Beleriand's premier vacation spot! Enjoy the best views in Beleriand aboard Thorondor's Explorers Eagle Tours, dine at one of our five-star First Age taverns, then catch the Tony award-winning production of Maeglin in the city's theater district. Shopaholics will love choosing from the best Noldorin craftsmanship has to offer, and bus tours travel Idril's famous escape route.

Today's Challenge:
Start a story or poem with Charles Dickens' famous opening line from A Tale of Two Cities: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." (If you're creating a piece of artwork for this challenge, use this line as your theme or title.)

Gondolin Passport Stamp Passport Stamp:
Once you complete the challenge, you may save today's image or copy the code below to display your passport stamp wherever HTML is acceptable. To have your stamp added to your passport, please comment on this post.

<img src="http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/images/b2mem11/gondolin.png" alt="Gondolin Passport Stamp" />

We're about one-third through the challenge, and it's been so exciting to see so many stories, poems, and artworks by both old friends and authors I've not had the privilege of meeting before! Thank you to all who have participated, whether as a creator, volunteer, or reviewer! :)

For anyone who may be just joining us, please post here when you complete your challenge. If you've posted it publicly, we encourage you to include a link. We are using these posts as master lists for putting together passports for participants.

There are no due dates or deadlines, so feel free to complete (and claim stamps for) past challenges if the inspiration strikes!

Finally, just a reminder that responses need only answer the challenge in the blue box; including the location is not expected and certainly not required.

I was looking forward to this, but all I see in either IE or Firefox is a black box where the image should be? :-(

Ah, OK, I see the problem - on my monitor there's very little contrast between the ink and the background, so on first viewing the image just looked black. This work monitor doesn't help by having a very reflective glass panel in the front, so looking at a black background tends to mean I'm looking at my own reflection. I shouldn't worry, it's probably just me - I like what I can see of it!

I thought the background might have been the problem. Still, glad you liked what little you can see :)

My contribution can be found at my lj. It's a response to days 4 and 10, f-locked, and written in Polish for a change. To sum it up, it presents Ecthelion's feelings after Aredhel came back to Gondolin and Eol killed her.

Thank you for your hard work :)

Cheers,
Binka

I split the quote, but got it done, and if anyone wants to quibble with me I'll be more than happy to argue semantics.

A sort of remix of "Dear Naneth..." I suppose, which is my own fic, so I didn't call it a remix, lol...different conversation, at least. http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=1369 Maybe I'll combine the two for a third fic?

I took inspiration by a line further into the opening paragraph, if that's all right.

“…it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…”

Tried so hard for another Gondolin idea, nothing came. E/G fluff happened instead. Very short E/G fluff. Passport stamp, please (even though it's so short it's a case of 'blink and you'll miss it')

And now I need to go write some more. I had the idea of catching up before the end of the month, but that is so not going to happen now :P. Having such a good time with these. No pressure, just loads of fun.

Thanks for the passport, sweetie. It already looks quite cool. I'll be writing more, just had no time for play in the last week or so. I'll comment as they get done.

And then I need to start tidying and posting them too *blush*
