The Birthday Contest Prize List (At Last!) and a Deadline Extension

My husband and I have been inching along on finalizing the prize list for weeks now, in the midst of me completing my final grad school semester before my thesis (\0/) and starting summer session at the school where I teach. So this is much later than I'd hoped, but I could neither avoid life nor push back our 10th birthday, and there just weren't enough hours in the day!

As a result of being so late announcing the prizes, though, the mod team has decided to extend the deadline for the birthday contest until August 15. A reminder: All stories using our random Silmfic prompt generator and posted to the archive before the deadline are eligible. The rules are reprinted below.

And the three prizes are ...

• A book set, including a 1st edition copy of The Silmarillion, Perilous and Fair: Women in the Works and Life of J. R. R. Tolkien (essay collection, edited by Janet Brennan Croft), and The Road to Middle-earth by Tom Shippey.


• Your choice of a print by Tolkien fan artist and professional illustrator Jenny Dolfen, signed by the artist.


• A vintage, hard-to-find jigsaw puzzle (500 pieces) featuring an illustration from Tolkien's Father Christmas Letters.

10th Birthday Prize Drawing Rules

1. All stories written using the Silmfic prompt generator during the month of July are eligible for the drawing.


2. In order to be eligible, stories created for the contest must
   
   
   • be posted to the SWG archive at silmarillionwritersguild.org. Stories posted to our LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, Yahoo! or Tumblr groups are not eligible.
   
   
   • select 10th Birthday Celebration Contest from the Challenges list. Please note that there is also a 10th Birthday Celebration NO CONTEST option for those who wish to write using the generator in honor of our birthday but don't want to be entered in the drawing; make sure you select the correct challenge.
   
   
   • list the prompts you used to create the story in the Story Notes or Chapter Notes.
   
   
   
3. You can roll for just one category or all ten. You can reroll in a category if you want to, so if you end up with an impossible prompt or something you're just not comfortable writing, feel free to try again. And again and again. (Seriously, we have no idea if and how many times you reroll! Have fun with it!)


4. Each story posted will result in one entry into the drawing. (So if you post five stories, you will have five entries into the drawing.)


5. Each participant is eligible to win only once.


6. If you win, you must be willing to provide a mailing address for us to send your prize to you.


7. If you post an entry as part of an existing collection, please make sure to select 10th Birthday Celebration Contest from the challenges list and identify the prompts you used in the chapter notes for the piece or pieces that you are entering. This is how our mods will know from the table of contents of your collection which pieces in the collection are being entered, so it is important to place the prompts in the correct location.


8. You can add a chapter to an existing work-in-progress using the prompt generator. Again, make sure to select the correct challenge and include your prompts in the chapter notes for the chapter(s) you are entering.


9. The contest begins July 1 and ends on August 15 at midnight Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). We will draw winners on August 16. Winners will be notified at the email address they have listed on the SWG archive, so please make sure this is correct if you are participating. If we do not hear back within a week, we will re-draw a new winner. If you expect to be offline during the week after the drawing, please let us know ahead of time so that we do not give away your prize if you win and cannot respond within a week.

Oh, thank god. :D

If I manage an entry and end up getting drawn, where should I let you all know that I might not be online? Because at this point I'm really not sure. That week might be a wreck, because I've now broken my foot and have to move back to school at the end of that week. So I might just be collapsing into bed when not actively doing something.

I honestly wish I was eligible! Although Bobby did tell me that he ordered two copies of Perilous and Fair, knowing it would be hard for me to part with the prize copy otherwise ... :D

Yay! I'm glad we extended the deadline, for more than one reason. The original deadline was closer to our actual birthday, but there have been so many Tolkien fandom challenges running this past month that I hope this makes it easier for everyone to get something entered if they want to. (Also, I won't have to worry about sending birthday cards at the same time as squaring away the prize drawing! :D)

Wow, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to manage a fic (I'm still not sure), but those prizes are amazing so I'm definitely going to have to try. :D

It doesn't have to be long or complicated, and it's perfectly allowable to use the generator to prompt a chapter in a WiP.

Working on the generator was so much fun, and now I'm finally writing a thing for it as well! :D I'll upload it to the birthday collection soon, hopefully!

Not going to enter the contest for moddy reasons (I know that's not in the rules, but showing up at the birthday party I helped with and asking for a gift on top of that makes me feel awkward), but if I were, I'd be very tempted by the Perilous and Fair essay collection. Did anyone here have a chance to read it yet?

I do wish you would enter and not feel awkward! :) I will do the drawing (unless Rhapsody's son wants to draw winners like he drew our BINGO numbers for B2MeM), so I'm the only person who isn't allowed to win. I did that intentionally since it would be rather silly for me to "win" something that I'm buying in the first place! :) But that also conveniently allows mods to participate; the way I see it, since you all do the heavy lifting in the group, you should have every right to participate in this.

But whether you decide to enter or not, I'm glad you're writing something.

Bobby ordered two copies of Perilous and Fair--one for the drawing and one for me--so I will definitely be checking it out and I'm sure blathering/blogging about it. I'm hoping it will arrive in time to be beach reading ...

Yay! I'm glad we extended the deadline too. August was packed with various fandom things, and so many of them were awesome that I don't know how I would have chosen if I was writing. So I hope that this gives people who were busy with all those other challenges to jump in here too if they want.
