This is an amazing piece written in Elleth's series about Nellas an Niënor. Where Sweet Water and Gold (https://archiveofourown.org/works/1036062) introduces us to this pairing, Wreath in the Rapids (https://archiveofourown.org/works/1114844) has you perched on your seet. By the Iris Mere is its satisfying conclusion with great characterisation and gorgeous language that just flows.

Three years ago, Solanaceae wrote a beautiful story for me. I read it again this morning and again I was swept away by the way she portrays Nellas in this piece, and how she came to love Niënor so much.

Dear Solanaceae, I know that I've let you know - very briefly - that I loved your story. I read your marvellous story on my way to a conference that I had to attend and shortly before I got off the train, I finished reading it. There hasn’t been time yet to sit down and write a review that reflects how awesome it is. Your story has stuck with me ever since because it is such a marvellous and wonderous character piece. I have a soft spot for Nellas, in the books she is hardly mentioned and stories with her are hard to come by. How do you bring such an interesting character to life? How can you write such a tale from her point of view and giving her a voice that shows us how she views her world? She has so many roles to play in this piece and I love how she gradually changed from a reluctant guardian to a lover who takes care of her two loves in her life. Her world slowly changes and she brings so much joy in Nienor’s life. Your writing fully engaged me in your story, the moment Nienor feels she has to leave to travel – guised – with her mother’s company, you have me as a reader shouting: Nellas, go with her. And to read that she cannot leave, fearing the world outside the girdle. I just could smack her. Then her self-doubt, knowing something is amiss since she is so tapped into Arda’s tapestry and finally she goes to seek out her love. It was that I was reading it in the train, because otherwise her cheerleader squad would have shook those pom poms as she ran, searching for Nienor.
And oh the ending, simply perfect. So simple and so effective. How can you not lean back and feel happy with such good writing. Such marvellous engaging writing, what a gift. What a story. Thank you!

Summary:

The body which lies beneath the Haudh-en-Elleth does not have a name. Finduilas wanders the wilderness in its stead, and there meets someone as lost as she is.

I've read and enjoyed a lot of AU Finduilas/Nienor stories where they save themselves or each other, and this is a very good one. This story is so beautiful and sad, and yet strong and emotionally powerful. I love the writing here, too: "They rediscover language together, this way—Finduilas as the frost might melt in some deep, cold place, and her companion in a sudden spark the births a flame. So spring turns to summer, and their words multiply like leaves on the branches in the heat." I like how both characters remain so determined even when they've lost part of themselves.

Emotional hurt/comfort is one of my favorite tropes -- I can't get enough of it. This story clearly shows Arien's loneliness and weariness, the great burden she's taken on, and it makes the comfort and support that Ilmarë gives her all the more effective. “…I heard your spirit crying out in solitude” -- moving indeed.

I'm sure it's no surprise that loyalty is another favorite trope of mine, and I really like this story. I love Sedil's loyalty to Haleth, and her delight when her feelings are returned. I like the sense of grim endurance on the journey and the hard decisions they have to make (or that Haleth does, since she takes it on herself).

Haleth is fittingly strong and pragmatic here: “It may be that we will be remembered; it may be that we will be lost to memory, even the long memory of the Elves. It matters not. We choose to make our own history, and if our deeds and our deaths are not recorded in their great songs, so be it.” I really love that.
