silwritersguildThroughout 2014, two courageous members of the SWG, Independence1776 and Lyra curated, illustrated and generally organized The Silmarillion (Re-)Reading Project that spanned all the glory of the Elder Days, from the Ainulindalë to the Rings of Power and the Third Age.
The project got started with the official introductory post on Tolkien's birthday (January 3) and wrapped up on December 28, 2014. With a few exceptions (very short chapters), a new chapter was discussed every two weeks: there was an introduction featuring a short summary of the chapter, questions that may have popped up during reading, notes concerning alternative versions of events in that chapter (after all, Tolkien regularly changed his mind about stuff), quotes that resonated with readers and potential topics for discussion. Participants then jumped in on the discussion and ... you can imagine what followed. There were also fanwork rec lists related to the chapter under consideration. At the end of the year, all participants, both newcomers and seasoned Silmfans had developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for this very complex text.
