During our Silmarillion40 event in 2017, one of our most prolific writers and commenters Himring compiled a help list of Quenya names and their meanings, in case people had trouble working out who is who in fic. Although she claims this is not an official list, she used her extensive knowledge of the canonical sources - mainly "The Shibboleth of Fëanor" in Peoples of Middle-earth - and the "Quenya names" links page on Tolkien Gateway and the linked entries to put it together. So, if you're in doubt about who Angamaitë is or the story you're reading mentions somebody called Quendingoldo and there's no clue as to who that may be, this is the resource you need! And as you're consulting the list, take some time to read some of Himring's marvelous stories too!

Did you know? Angamaitë is the Quenya name of Angrod and Quendingoldo is Pengolodh!

Have you ever wondered what J.R.R. Tolkien actually stated about the delay of the Teleri to reach Aman after the Great Journey? Or when Orcs first entered Beleriand? Or how old was Dior when the Feanorians attacked Doriath?

Using information from The Annals of Aman (HoMe: Morgoth’s Ring, Part Two), The Grey Annals (HoMe: The War of the Jewels, Part One with final section and revisions in Part Three, section I) and The Tale of Years (HoMe: The War of the Jewels, Part Three, section V), back in 2011, clotho123 produced a very detailed, invaluable, time-saving chronology to be used, as she said, as a potentially useful guide rather than a rigid framework. It's a real goldmine of information! And while you're at it, check her wonderful stories too!

Throughout 2014, two courageous members of the SWG, Independence1776 and Lyra curated, illustrated and generally organized The Silmarillion (Re-)Reading Project that spanned all the glory of the Elder Days, from the Ainulindalë to the Rings of Power and the Third Age.

The project got started with the official introductory post on Tolkien's birthday (January 3) and wrapped up on December 28, 2014. With a few exceptions (very short chapters), a new chapter was discussed every two weeks: there was an introduction featuring a short summary of the chapter, questions that may have popped up during reading, notes concerning alternative versions of events in that chapter (after all, Tolkien regularly changed his mind about stuff), quotes that resonated with readers and potential topics for discussion. Participants then jumped in on the discussion and ... you can imagine what followed. There were also fanwork rec lists related to the chapter under consideration. At the end of the year, all participants, both newcomers and seasoned Silmfans had developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for this very complex text.

When the SWG turned ten years old, we wanted to give a gift--a mathom, if you will--to the Tolkienfic fandom community that had allowed us to thrive for a decade. And so we created the Random Silmfic Prompt Generator: a prompt roller that would randomly choose a prompt from up to ten different categories, one for each year of our existence.

We tailored our prompt generator to work for newcomers to The Silmarillion to the sort of gnarled Silmfic veteran willing to try a hurt/comfort story about Dagnir set at the time when Elwing finds Eärendil and they pass into the West and featuring seashells and pearls. (Yes, I just rolled that one. Feel free to try it, if you dare!) You can roll one category, several, or all ten. Categories encompass genres, characters, groups, locations, and time periods, as well as prompts featuring story elements and quotes. If taking what Fate serves you isn't your speed, you can roll and reroll to your heart's content, till you get that perfect prompt that begs to be written.

Go ahead ... roll a random Silmfic prompt and see what you get!

In August and September 2010 we celebrated the SWG's fifth birthday and we commemorated it the only way we know how: with stories, poems, and artwork. Several components made up the celebration: there were themes proposed by our members to be used as inspiration for original works or in compilations published works and tokens to recognize the people and work that inspired an entertained us - and still do!

Just a small sample of the fantastic themes: Who? A celebration of minor characters, Númenórean Queens, Do something that's never been done,
Most sinster villain, the classic Five things , of course no Silmarillion celebration without Minstrelsy and Music, The Lays of Beleriand reloaded and many others.

Don't miss the fantastic stories and beautiful artwork that still inspire and amaze us!

August has been Akallabeth month since 2006.It started as a challenge aimed at encouraging authors to focus their work on the Second Age, a time of soaring ambition and tragic downfalls which fandom often overlooked at that time. The challenge was repeated for the next two years and, as the SWG became home to more writers writing pieces set in this period it was also used to spotlight existing Akallabêth stories on our archive.

Then in 2009, we decided to host a special event focused on the Akallabeth: we invited our Second-Age authors on the archive--and anyone else who wished to contribute--to "retell" the story of the Akallabêth. But when we say "retell," we don't mean recapping the events that we can all read about in the book. Instead, the authors and artists who contributed to the compilation took the familiar tales and illuminated them, showing them from unfamiliar perspectives or in greater detail or with new interpretations.

Almost ten years later, we heartily invite everyone, newcomers and veterans alike, to revisit the compilation and enjoy the wonderful stories, poems and illustrations. From Elros and Elrond's momentous decision to the changing of the world, you will find thirty-seven original, challenging, amazing views of the fate of Numenor. Don't miss them!
