At the end of last year, I posted here about a survey I was conducting for readers and writers of Tolkien-based fan fiction. Well, we are rapidly drawing near to the closing date of the survey, so I wanted to issue a reminder to anyone who wanted to take the survey and has not already. November 30 will be the last day that the survey will be available.

All readers and/or writers of Tolkien-based fan fiction are eligible. The survey takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and is entirely anonymous. You are welcome to skip any questions that you are not comfortable answering (including demographic questions).

Preliminary data from the survey has already been used in presentations I gave earlier this year at Mythmoot III and the New York Tolkien Conference and in an article published in Mythprint. (My papers are available on Academia.edu for the interested/curious: https://apus.academia.edu/DawnWallsThumma) I am currently working on an article for a Tolkien studies journal that will use the final results, and I will continue to use the data in my academic and fannish research. Other researchers who wish to use the data are welcome to contact me for a copy once the survey closes.

Finally, I appreciate all help in getting the word out about my survey to other corners of the Tolkien fan community. I'd like to reach as many fanfic readers and writers as possible, so please do signal-boost the survey if you're comfortable doing so.

I generally try to confine group management questions to our Yahoo group, but in this instance, I believe that the opinions of our LiveJournal members are too valuable to pass up. As many of you know, I am building the SWG a website and a story archive. I am working mostly alone, so progress is slow-going, and in order that I may maximize my efficiency and serve the needs of the group best, it is very important to me to learn the group's opinions on which site features they will use the most.

The following survey has seven questions, and if you would take a moment to answer them, I would greatly appreciate it. Please be honest; I am keeping the results anonymous because I do not really care who would use the story archive and who is looking more for discussion forums; my concern is to get a (fairly) accurate sampling of group preferences so that I may focus my energy in that direction.

This survey is open to everyone--members and non-members--so if you have any friends who are Silmarillion authors and are not a member of our Yahoo group or LiveJournal but might use our archive and website, please feel free to point them in this direction.

For Yahoo group members who do not have LiveJournal accounts, I have replicated this poll in our Yahoo group here. Please do not take the poll in both places; I will be combining the results and do not want double votes to confound the results.

I will be collecting results two weeks from now on 17 July 2006 so please reply before then.

If you would like clarification on what exactly are the various site features being surveyed, I have included a synopsis below the poll questions.
