March 8: Dorthonion

In the north of Beleriand, find the intriguing Dorthinion countryside, where many exciting expeditions await you. This realm is situated in the North, from the plains to the sloping hillsides. Known for its extensive pine forests, the majority of Dorthonion consists of a high plateau with bare and rocky peaks rising to higher altitudes than the mountains of the nearby Ered Wethrin, making it ideal for mountaineering. Did you always wanted to follow in the footsteps of Beren, Lúthien, Beleg and Túrin in their heroic quests but want to keep both feet on the ground? You can find a wild adventure here, in the place where you can be tested and be amongst the finest and fiercest warriors, taking on rugged nature. If roughing it isn't for you, take a journey instead to Tarn Aeluin, in whose waters the reflected stars at night will free your inner romantic.

Today's Challenge:
From the lone shieling of the misty island,
Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas -
Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland,
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides!
Fair these broad meads, these hoary woods are grand;
But we are exiles from our fathers' land.

- from the “Canadian Boat Song”, attributed to John Galt

Write a story or poem or create a piece of artwork reflecting identification with or connection to one’s land, country or culture.

Or write a story or poem or create a piece of artwork featuring kilts.

Dorthonion Passport Stamp Passport Stamp:
Once you complete the challenge, you may save today's image or copy the code below to display your passport stamp wherever HTML is acceptable. To have your stamp added to your passport, please comment on this post.

<img src="http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/images/b2mem11/dorthonion.png" alt="Dorthonion Passport Stamp" />

To the best of my knowledge, all passports have been sent out to those who have been commenting here! If, for some reason, you haven't heard from me or one of the other mods about your passport, either leave a comment here or contact me at DawnFelagund@gmail.com.

Please comment on this post when you complete your entry for today's challenge, and we will add Dorthonion's stamp to your passport. If your piece is publicly posted, we encourage you to share a link so that others can enjoy your story, poem, or artwork!

Remember that responses need only answer the challenge in the blue box. (Today, we have two possible challenges! You need only answer one, of course, to receive your stamp.) You do not need to include the day's location in your response.

If you're just joining us, just a reminder that none of these challenges have due dates. If you see a past challenge you like, please do respond to it and let us know so that we can stamp your passport!

Finally (and then I'll shut up), I've been asked this a few times now, so that tells me we need a rules clarification. A single piece can satisfy multiple challenges and be eligible for stamps for all of them. For example, if you've chosen to write a 10,000-word story that satisfies three challenges, that is perfectly acceptable, and all three stamps are yours. We want our authors who write longer works to feel just as welcome and able to succeed as those who prefer ficlets and other short works! I've updated the event guidelines to reflect this clarification.

Title: Come What May
Author: Kaylee Arafinwiel
Summary: For B2MEM 2011, Prompt 8: Home. A certain Elf and Dwarf sit together after the death of their very best friend, discussing where their home shall be.

"It is very difficult," Legolas admitted to Gimli as they sat together, the Elf sipping at a goblet of Ithilien's peach wine, the Dwarf with a tankard of ale. "I will have to leave soon now, Elvellon. But this land has become a home to me." He gazed out over the throngs of people, sapphire eyes seeking out the King, dancing with his sister. "The king is dead...long live the King," he murmured, eyes prickling with tears. "May the Belain bless your spirit, Estel, wherever you are."

"Aye, 'tis difficult, Elf," Gimli said gruffly, placing his rough hand over Legolas' slender one. "Aragorn was a dear friend to both of us. You knew him far longer than I did, so I will not pretend to understand your grief. No doubt it eclipses mine."

"Nay, Master Dwarf," Legolas rejoined, "no doubt yours is as great as mine. No need for competitions here and now. We two were among his dearest friends, and were the hobbits yet with us, they too would grieve as we do today."

"Nonsense, Master Elf," Gimli snorted, "they would say 'it is too bad Strider's missing out on this fine feast, but more for us now, isn't there!'" He managed a smile, and Legolas laughed reluctantly.

"Where will you go then, Legolas? Home to Eryn Lasgalen?" Gimli asked, "if you mean to forsake Ithilien?"

"Nay, I cannot even call the Wood of Greenleaves home, Elvellon-nin," Legolas said, shaking his head slowly. "Do you remember the day we heard the gulls?"
"Aye," Gimli said gruffly, having managed to successfully not think of that until just now.

"It is time, Elvellon. I must seek the uttermost West. Adar will not stop me."
"Nor will he be pleased," Gimli remarked, "if you are running away again." His words died on his lips, as Legolas turned to him with a look so completely and utterly other that Gimli was forcibly reminded of just what his immortal friend was.

"I am not running away. I am going home," Legolas said, the light of his Being flaring with such a presence that Gimli was awestruck. "Will you come with me, Elvellon?" Legolas asked, once he had calmed. Gimli blinked. "Me? A Mortal?"

"A Son of Aule and Companion of the Ring-bearer," Legolas corrected. "The Ring-bearers were given such grace. Why would you not have earned it, Elf-friend?"

"Besides," Legolas added, "will not your lady desire to see you again?" He had the satisfaction of seeing his friend's face warm considerably.
"Then, if you are certain," Gimli said eventually, "how can I not join you, Master Elf? Never let it be said a Dwarf was afraid."

"I will be glad to have your company, Elvellon," Legolas said sincerely. "Thank you."
"You are most welcome," Gimli replied. "We will take this last adventure together, come what may."

Legolas nodded, and as the two considered their plans, the feast celebrating the life of the first King and the accession of his son went on into the night.

The End

Actually, can you double check? I looked at it again and there's no new stamp...and the html code-thing I used to attach the picture to my profile as well without the passport (got in the habit of doing it, kept it up, guess I just like it on there twice?) isn't showing a picture either, just the link-thing-whatever Dawn and the other mods call it. Any chance sparkly modly magic could be worked here?

This is how yours should look like now

Image

If you want to add it to your profile at LJ or at MPTT, You can use the following coding: [img src="http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/images/b2mem11/passports/Passport_kayleelupin.png" alt="B2MeM Passport" /]

Just replace the square brackets ([) with the angle brackets (<) and you should be able to add the image to your profile at LJ, SWG and other e-fiction sites!

(sorry, typo day here!)

But I am glad you can see it now, the next time when you think you are missing stamps press the Shift-F5 key simultaneously. This forces your browser to pull the most recent data from the web!

Haha, yes, 2nd breakfast, I had brown sugar and cinnamon PopTarts. (For first breakfast I had chocolate mini Weetabix from the British Food Centre. Eight dollars for one box...made my mum upset with me for it, but imported and all, so...)

Yes, west coast, just so! California to be precise :) Nine hours ahead...so not the UK, then? Germany or somewhere in the area?

oh, yes, Rhapsody!!! I'm fine. I've written for every day...I've just been having LJ issues and been lazy about getting them up on MPTT! I'm sorry!

San Jose is inland, about an hour's drive from the California coast...I sincerely doubt a tsunami would get us, it'd have to drown San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Monterey first...That would be ick. I'm fine, seriously. Is it all right if I still have my stamps up to day 11? I'll get them up on MPTT as soon as possible, I promise.
