Am I in the right place? I don't see any other entries.
Anyhoo, I'm primarily a LOTR writer. But I've written a few very short ficlets (mega-drabbles and one true drabble) based on certain situations in the SILMARILLION, have another in the works, and some in my head.
My interest in the SILMARILLION is more plot-based than character; I have found some tremendously powerful situations and scenes or even brief paragraphs.
One of my biggest problems in reading the SIL is an inability to keep all the Elf-clans distinct in my mind. Blame JRRT and his distressing tendancy to name half of his Elves with names beginning with F, and let's not even get into mother-names, etc. because then my eyes really begin to glaze over.
My favorite single tale in the SIL is probably the story of Beren & Luthien; since they are such a strong pair of lovers, and I'm also very fond of Huan the Hound.
Hi Raksha! You certainly are in the right place! You don't see any other entries because the group is new and we are just getting organized, but hopefully, soon, we will be posting our stories here, workshopping, etc. All that fun stuff :)
One of my biggest problems in reading the SIL is an inability to keep all the Elf-clans distinct in my mind. Blame JRRT and his distressing tendancy to name half of his Elves with names beginning with F
LOL! Very true! My first time reading through the Sil, I got to the name "Feanor" and actually stopped and said, "Feanor? Who's that?" looked him up in the handy index, and followed it with, "Oh. I think he must be important...."
So feel free to post your Sil stuff here! We have a lot of Feanatics, so Beren and Luthien will be a welcome change :)
(And my husband's favorite is Huan, so that'll give me an excuse to point him in this direction! :D)
That's the URL for my WIP ficlet-compilation, entitled Divers Drabbles. It includes three (so far) SILM pieces - THE GUAFDIAN (a Huan drabble), NAERAMARTH (Nienor v. Glaurung), and REFUGE (Elrond and Maglor and Maedhros during and after the assault on the Havens at Sirion). Reviews are definitely welcomed, even negative ones; especially since my Nienor and Elrond pieces didn't get many.
I'm not a huge fan of the Tale of the Miserably Unhappy and Doomed Children o' Hurin, btw. Usually, I just skip it. But the bit about Nienor's literally running into big bad Glaurung just begged me to put her spin on it)
One of these days I may just do an AU Tale of the Children of Hurin with a happier ending. Guest-starring Tom Bombadil or something. Because I can - BwaHaHaHa!
I had no trouble remembering Feanor. He's very memorable; and not just because he's the only Elf we know of who managed to sire seven kids. It's Finarfin and Finrod Felagund and Fingon and Finwe and trying to remember how they're allllll related to each other (Finarfin is Galadriel's father, but I have no clue who Finrod Felagund is. Isn't Fingon supposed to be Gil-Galad's son). And all those kids of Feanor's; I cannot remember the differences between Caranthir and Curufin and Celegorm - except that Celegorm was the father of Celebrimbor.
I can't even begin to remember the differences between the Nandor, Avari, Moriquendi, Laiquendi, and Eyecandi. Probably they're all Eyecandi. And where the Silvan Elves of Mirkwood fit in, I don't know; and Thranduil being apparently Sindar makes it no easier.
As for BEREN & LUTHIEN, I think of it as really HUAN & LUTHIEN, the Heart-Warming Adventures Of An Elf-Girl And Her Dog. Guest starring the scruffy Man-pest, assorted orcs and Morgoth the Annoying and Sauron the Inconvenient.
I'll definitely check that out! Especially the bit about Elrond, Maglor, and Maedhros. (Shameless SoF fancier!)
It's Finarfin and Finrod Felagund and Fingon and Finwe and trying to remember how they're allllll related to each other (Finarfin is Galadriel's father, but I have no clue who Finrod Felagund is. Isn't Fingon supposed to be Gil-Galad's son)
I'll try not to be hurt that you don't know who Finrod Felagund is ;D
Finrod Felagund is the eldest son of Finarfin, so Galadriel's big brother. He was the king of Nargothrond in Middle-earth and responsible for leading the party that accompanied Beren on his quest to retrieve the Silmaril.
Gil-Galad is Fingon's son. Sort of. Tolkien couldn't make up his mind about who Gil-Galad's father was. Sometimes, it was Fingon. Sometimes, it was Orodreth. Sometimes, it was Finrod. It depends on the version you read. (So you're not the *only* one who's confused about this!)
And all those kids of Feanor's; I cannot remember the differences between Caranthir and Curufin and Celegorm - except that Celegorm was the father of Celebrimbor.
Actually, it was Curufin ;D (I know, I'm not helping!)
Probably they're all Eyecandi.
LOL! I would agree with this! And with it being hard to keep all the Elf-clans straight. Thank goodness for the little graphic in the back of the Sil or I think I'd be hopeless even now!

ROFLMAO! This is great! (And true ;D)
RAKSHA, who is being obnoxiously irreverent.
Nothing wrong with irreverence (says the author of the irreverent Sil play, walking away and whistling innocently)
I write LOTR and Silmarillion fics. I'm particularly partial to all of Finarfin's family (all the way down to Elladan and Elrohir), Glorfindel (I believe Glorfy of Gondolin and Glorfy of Imladris are the same elf), Ecthelion of the Fountain, and the occasional well-written Haldir.
In my writing and reading, I've been flustered that so few people seem to appreciate Sil fics. I received a copy of the Silmarillion when I was about 12 years old from a friend who thought I'd like that sort of thing and the following Christmas I was given LOTR and the Hobbit. I have managed to acquire all of the History of Middle Earth books which I started collecting 16 or so years ago. Gosh, I sound old...
I have a degree in writing and editing with a minor in linguistics. In a past life, I was a technical writer doing software documentation, online help, and editing. Now I'm a stay home mom with 3 kids (my youngest starts school this year). Okay, I am old. The kids are all heavily steeped in LOTR, imagine that, and my daughter lost the One Ring in the family room sofa a couple of years ago, so I expect ringwraiths to start circling the house any day now. I volunteer at the kids' school writing the Home and School Assoc newsletter and writing/copyediting/formatting whatever the office asks me to. I started writing fanfic in 2004 and am using it to have to fun as well as learn how to write fiction.
Sorry to be so long winded, but I keep getting interrupted and forgetting what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it...
Hello back!

Me too. The resounding silence I met when I first posted my Sil story at HASA was a bit disheartening. Of course, I then made friends and they felt obligated to read it...now I have a pretty decent audience :) I started the group for this reason: I know that we Sil-people are out there, but it is so hard to find people in any one place. Most of my Sil friends come from a variety of places. I'm kind of hoping to bring all those places together.
(Big dreams, I know!)

Oh, then you're perfect for this fandom! My degree is in psychology with a minor in writing. I also worked as an editor for a while, but it was for a literary magazine, small beans :) Now, I occasionally do copy-editing for my boss and beta-read for a few people, but I miss being out of the writing world.

Sorry to be so long winded, but I keep getting interrupted and forgetting what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it...
I've actually started a long fic starring Finarfin, and so far, it's the longest fic I've ever seen that's specifically about him. I'm two or three chapters into it (can't decide if a small fic I wrote for a challenge at another group will be part of it as a sort of prologue or not). It's a romance/angst piece that's in danger of turning NC-17 in a few chapters. There is a lot of character development for the OCs that I need to work on and it's the first time I've written from the male point of view, so lots of new stuff for me there.
I know some more Sil people and will spread the word - or should I just give you their e-mail addresses?
You know, I don't think I know of any long Finarfin fics either. I take his PoV occasionally in my story (which is so *ungodly* long...::weeps::), but an entire long story from just his perspective, I don't think I've ever seen.
Well, you can forge the way, then! It is strange, too, because I find him an intriguing character and can't believe people haven't done more with him. He doesn't do much until his brothers hightail it to Middle-earth, but yet he is a witness to all and to find himself as King when, surely, he had no hopes of succession....
Uh, oh, I feel a ramble coming on, so I'm going to stop while I still can! :D Suffice to say that I look forward to a Finarfin story, including the NC-17 bits ;D (Sorry, pervy Elf fancier!)

Either would be fine! I can send invites for the group from our Yahoo! page without problem. If you want to do it this way, send the names to my personal email account dawnfelagund@comcast.net.
I think this is going to be so much fun!
Me too! I started this project back in March; I am very excited that it is finally working out! :D
Hi Dawn and Ellfine. It's me, Shemyaza from ffn. I am also a member of the HA Yahoo Group so I saw Dawn's posting on this LJ and came over. I've already mentioned my Silm fic, A Singular Honour, to Dawn, but since it's not strictly only Silmarillion, but has a few aspects that are, shall we say, more modern, I wasn't sure that it fitted the bill. Anyway it's nice to see at least a couple of Silm writers coming out of the woodwork, most people use the events of the Silmarillion, the characters and the history as a background for other things!
I haven't written any more of my fic yet, I have the grandson here at the moment and it's more difficult to concentrate. (How on earth did I manage when my two boys were small?)
I will come back here when I get a moment, but in the meantime I look forward to some discussions here, but I think I need to become an LJ user at some stage. I hate being Anonymous.

Anything with Silmarillion works for me! :) If I sound overly harsh about things *needing* to be Sil-based in this community, it is because LotR seems to so easily overwhelm Sil wherever I go. But I am a liberal through-and-through and that includes in my interpretation of what constitutes Sil-based writing.

Accounts are free and easy. You don't have to use your personal journal if you just want to post in the community. I run an RPG community as well as silwritersguild and none of the members use their LJs except to post entries into the RPG except me.
Again, welcome to the community, and I hope to see you around :) Dawn Felagund
This is really great, Dawn, you're getting everything very organized! I went onto the database and added myself (and left out the LOTR characters - LOL!) Hope it was ok to add myself, myself.
As far as the workshopping, I was *glad* to see that my workshop piece tanked like the Titanic on a stormy night, but really - no!! I'm kidding!! I actually got a great read and advice from Fanged Geranium, which I put into effect. Are you going to announce when the next piece goes up so we can read it and make comments, answer questions, etc.? I guess it was a good idea to get organized first so that all the different elements in the SWG journal can go into separate areas; otherwise it is too confusing, and maybe that was the problem.
BTW, I replied to your e-mail. Did you get it? I am going to try a few different things in order to reach you.
Oh, and for A Light in the Darkness: I am posting it to my LJ. And it is on HA Beta.
Oh, absolutely! It saves me from having to do so :)

LOL! I think I jumped into things to soon, before things were solidified with the group, and I apologize for that. I have a bad habit of taking on too many things and assuming everyone has the same amount of free time as I do. Hopefully, we will get a workshop plan worked out soon. I'd really like to do your piece again (or any of your pieces), if you would like?
Weee, I've found the first entry by browsing back from the latest one on general SWG page :))) I was afraid browse back button will disappear but it looks like this feature works better for groups, than in my OWN LJ ;)
I was not sure if I haven't posted anything here. It looks like I haven't. Is there any possibility to check when have I joined the group? Maybe on Yahoo? I'm considering posting my only fic and a short silliness here, since I read others stuff but never participate. I hope there are new people here apart those who have seen it a few times before in my LJ, in silmfics or in silmarillion. I think I haven't posted it anywhere else...
I had asked a while ago, but it's harder sometimes to keep after people or explain tagging to people who don't know how to do it than it is just to do it myself. I'll get to it. Someday. ;)
