To make up from my slacker behavior the two Saturdays that I've been trusted with birthday uploads (if the upload is done on time, you know Rhapsody has done it ;), then I am posting this one a bit early by my time by right on time for those of you over the pond. (Also, I have a few new additions and will probably forget to mention them if I don't do it now!)

Firstly, the compilation for the "Cuivienen" theme is posted.

Two new pieces have also been added for past themes. Alasse has sent a new artwork for the "Heroes and Antiheroes" theme, entitled Young Turin.

And Lyra has sent a new story for "Minstrelsy and Magic" about Fingon's musical abilities: A Minor Talent.

Finally, I received a very good question today over email that called my attention to a mistake I had made in wording the description for the "Into the Woods" theme. I was asked if only stories were eligible for that theme since the description specified "stories" and said nothing about artwork.

In fact, stories, poetry, essays, artwork, and anything else you can dream up are eligible for all of the themes, unless the theme itself requires a specific format. (For example, "The Lays of Beleriand Reloaded" is specifically for poetry.) I've changed the wording on the site, but I wanted to point this out generally, since for every person who asks, usually five are wondering. :)

Upcoming deadlines: Older works for "The Songfic That Wasn't" should be sent in by September 1, which is Wednesday. This theme asks you to use one line from a song or poem in your story (or poem or artwork ;). New works for any of the themes may be sent at any time--there are no due dates.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

I am once again squeaking in just under the wire by my time in getting the next theme posted on Saturday. Apologies for the delay--you all now know that Saturday is one of the busiest days of the week for me. :) In any case, the Minstrelsy and Magic theme has been posted. First, we have one of our most extensive compilations, with many fine story excerpts, ficlets, and works of art focusing on music and musicians.

We also have a pair of new stories. In Lady Roisin's Hymn of the Trees and Stars, Daeron's young daughter wishes to follow in her father's footsteps and learn to play music. The story is also illustrated by Lyra.

Rhapsody has been working on her novel Bard Rising since NaNoWriMo 2007--three years!--and is at last sharing the first chapters of her story for this theme. Rhapsy's novel will take readers on a journey, showing how Maglor went from one of Arda's most famed musicians to a kinslayer and famed warrior. The prologue and first two chapters are up on the birthday page.

The next upcoming due date is for the Through the Ages theme, which features writing and artwork about characters who play an important role in multiple ages. Any older work that you'd like us to include in the Through the Ages compilation should be in by Monday, August 30. Older works for the Cuivienen theme were technically due today, but since I am so late in sending out this announcement, if you missed sending something, I will be less inclined to look at the date on the email for the next day or so. ;) New work for any of the themes can be sent at any time; there are no due dates.

I hope everyone enjoys the new compilation and many, many thanks to those of you who have contributed so far by sharing work, reading and reviewing your groupmates' stories, suggesting themes and tokens, and awarding tokens!

I have just posted a compilation and two new stories for the Five Things theme. The compilation can be found here.

We have two new works as well for this theme. Oshun has written a story entitled Five Times That Nerdanel Said 'Yes' and One Time She Did Not about one of the favored topics of Feanatic speculation: the begetting of the sons of Feanor. The first four chapters are up on the birthday page.

And I have written a story for this challenge called Five Bells, looking at the death of Miriel Serinde from five different perspectives:

Our next upcoming due date is for the Cuivienen theme, so if you have an older work that you'd like to see included in the compilation for this theme, please be sure to have it sent over by the 28th. You can either email us directly or use the form on the website.

Please remember that due dates apply only to older works. If you feel inspired to write a story or poem or create artwork for one of the themes, we will add your contribution even if the due date has passed.

Hi everyone,

I just posted the compilation for the "Most Sinister Villian" theme on the site, you can find it here: Most Sinister Villian

Today's theme includes an intriguing mix of stories featuring villains, a gorgeous piece of art featuring a villain and we also have received two new stories for this theme. Due to the nature of this theme, this compilation and stories contains dark content, which includes discussion of torture and sexual abuse. Reader discretion is advised.

Onto the fresh stories!

Atop Bald Mountain is written by Iavalir and relates the tale of an undelivered letter from Finarfin to Fingolfin, which contains a message that should have warned the latter of its perilous nature...

Lyra has written the multi-chaptered story 'Time for Trial' where Sauron has become Ar-Pharazôn's most trusted advisor, but it is not an easy job even for a cunning Maia. An unknown intruder in the palace gardens, however, enables him to set some of his more ambitious plans in motion. This story is complete and can be found here: Time for Trial.

Tomorrow – 25th of August - is the due date for the older works that you can send in for the "Minstrelsy and Music" theme. If you have characters who are singing or you have a story about one of the "professionals" (Maglor, Daeron, Ecthelion or Lindir), you can send in material for that theme!

Final note: Please remember that due dates apply only to older works. We are still accepting new works for all of the themes and those stories can be send in any time during this event!

Before I forget, we received a new story for the “Perfect Matches”-theme. The story is written by Oshun and is called: Cross-overs Are Harder Than They Look where it is Fingon who tries to write fan fiction and asks Maedhros for help...

That's it for now!

Hi, everyone,

On behalf of our owner, I posted the compilation for the Perfect Matches theme on the site: Perfect Matches

Today's theme includes a mix of crossover stories - with a different fandom or our own history - that have been on the archive for a while, as well as some pieces that are recently added!

We would also remind everyone that the next due date for older works is for Five Things, on 23 August. If you do have pieces that you would like to be added to the compilation, please use the form on the birthday page or send them to the moderator e-mail account since Dawn will still be away on vacation. That address is moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org .This way we can include every contribution on time. Don't forget that we are still accepting new works for all of the themes!

Have a fantastic time reading!

The compilation for the Heroes and Antiheroes theme has been posted up on the site.

It includes a mix of stories that have been on the archive for a while, as well as some pieces that are recently added, and some gorgeous artwork!

The next due date is for Most Sinister Villain, on 21 August. However, as I noted in my last announcement, I will be leaving for vacation on Saturday. If you have any older works that you would like included in the compilation, I would be most grateful if they could be sent over today or Friday so that I can have everything finished before I leave. If that's not possible, that's fine, of course--the due date will remain the 21st. But if you have a spare moment, I would be most grateful to have them early.

Important Note!!! Along those lines, beginning on Saturday, please send any birthday submissions for Sinister Villain to the moderator email address, or use the form on the website. Please don't send them to my personal email address! I should have email access at my hotel, but these things are never a guarantee, and I don't want any entries overlooked because I was unable to access my email. The same goes for any issues that require urgent attention. The mod address forwards to several of us, so issues can be handled quickly. That address is moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

Please remember too that due dates apply only to older works that you want included in the compilation. If you're working on a new story for one of the themes, you can send it at any time, and we will add it.

Today's compilation for the "Do Something That's Never Been Done" theme has been posted! Once again, we have a nice mix of stories and art, as well as several new pieces.

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/birthday/never.php

In Lady Roisin's Opportunity Discovered and Seized, Erendis captures Aldarion's eye on the day that he is to take the sceptre of Numenor, spurring one of The Silmarillion's tumultuous romances.

In Russandol's humor piece Livinlävidä, Legolas makes a bet with Gimli that he can do something that's never been done. Manwe is not impressed!

In Lyra's Unprecendented, Fingon announces to his surprised family whom he intends to marry: Maedhros.

In Fëanaro, Idril Vanimedle puts a new twist on a familiar story: the sibling rivalry between Fingolfin and Feanor, daughter of Miriel.

The next due date is tomorrow, for older works entered for the "Perfect Matches" theme. Perfect Matches is a compilation of crossovers, so if you have a crossover that you'd like to see included, please let us know!

Also, if I could beg and plead a favor of my fellow SWGers. I am going to be away on vacation beginning this weekend. My wonderful comod [livejournal.com profile] rhapsody11 will be handling uploads for the birthday event while I'm gone. However, it would be most helpful if any older works for Most Sinister Villain could be in Friday or earlier. This will allow me to get the compilation completely ready so that all Rhapsy has to do is post it next Tuesday. (If you have any new works for Perfect Matches or Sinister Villain that are finished, having them to me by Friday as well would make me most happy so that I could get them ready too!)

If you can't get them in by Friday, we will still be accepting Sinister Villain entries through the 21st. But if a spare moment happens to present itself in the next few days, and they can be sent early, we'd all be most grateful!

Final note: Please remember that due dates apply only to older works. We are still accepting new works for all of the themes!

I am barely squeaking this one in on time by my time and know it is overdue for many of you--my apologies! I was away today at the Renaissance Faire with my family, doing well by the Felagund family name by donning my pointy ears and acting most Elvishly. However, that meant that I added a little extra Elf-magic when putting together this collection. ;)

This compilation is a good one--worth the wait, I hope! :) We have many excerpts and poems about clashes between powerful characters up in the compilation.

In addition, Esteliel has authored a brand new story about the clash between Glorfindel and the Balrog:

Shadow and Flame

"Do Something That's Never Been Done" is the next theme up! The due date is technically today (the 14th), so if you have an older work that you want included and haven't sent, please send it asap! (Since I am late in posting, I will be forgiving of lateness on this one. ;) After that is "Heroes and Antiheroes," with the due date on the 16th for older works. Please remember that there is no due date for new works created for the themes. If you have a piece created for any of the themes we've posted so far, it is welcome at any time, and I will add it.

I have just posted the compilation for our second theme, Numenorean Queens.

In addition, Himring wrote a new story for it, Pyrrhic Wedding, so that is up on the compilation as well as its own page.

The next theme due date is Saturday, August 14, for "Do Something That's Never Been Done." Please remember that due dates apply only to older works that you want included in the compilation. If you want to write a new piece for any of the themes, you can turn that in at any time, and we will add it.

If you've sent us an entry for one of the themes and have not heard back from me that I've received it, please contact me; it possibly got lost in the [e]mail.

I am very much behind on posting and sending notifications for tokens, but there are lots of them, and I will have them along as soon as I can!

And here is the index page for the birthday site if you want to catch up on what's been posted so far.

The first compilation for our birthday celebration has been posted! The theme is Who? A Celebration of Minor and Original Characters. We received a lot of entries for this one, so do check it out! There are many excellent pieces collected in this compilation.

Please remember that tomorrow is the deadline for any older works that you would like included for the "Clash of the Titans" theme. New works created for the themes--including the one posted today!--are welcome at any time, and we will add them.

Enjoy!

As of last night, we stopped accepting new ideas for themes and tokens, so we now have a complete list and schedule.

But first, and very importantly, if you have sent us writing or art for inclusion in one of the themed compilations, and you have not heard from us that we've received it, please contact us to confirm receipt. We've had a few pieces disappear into the wilds of the Internet. Likewise, if you proposed a theme or token and do not see it on the list, please let us know.

New Themes

What Would Socrates Say? For stories in which characters question their own or another's philosophy or beliefs and thus challenge the status quo.

The Lays of Beleriand Reloaded. Or, "Poetry in Motion." A theme that celebrates verse inspired by The Silmarillion and ancillary works.

Into the Woods. A celebration of stories focused on the denizens of Doriath.

To My Dear ... The distances between certain characters are enormous, but they somehow maintain close friendships. Why not publish the letters they used to stay in touch?

All of the themes (plus due dates for sending in older work, posting dates, et cetera) can be found on our birthday page.

New Tokens

Most Delightful Heresy. For the most refreshing, insightful or intriguing deviation from common fanon or canon interpretation.

The Golden Vial of Oil Award. For slash that is both erotic and humorous.

Most Likely to Make a Linguist Happy. For creative use of Tolkien's imaginary languages in a story.

The Tirion Mothers Against Oath-Taking Public Service Award. For an outstanding portrayal of Nerdanel.

Is That a Strongbow in Your Pocket or Are You Just Glad to See Me? For an excellent portrayal of Beleg.

She's All That. For an engaging characterization of Luthien.

You Made Me Love You (I didn't want to do it). Awarded to a story that took a canon character you didn't care for and redeemed him/her.

It's Only a Flesh Wound. For writing involving injuries and their treatment.

First Times. The first rise of the sun or moon, the first time someone makes love, or the first time someone takes a sword in hand - this is a token for stories describing exciting, astonishing, painful or beautiful first times.

Spring and Summer; Love and Laughter. A token to honor those who write stories that cheer us up after we depress ourselves reading the more prevalent stories of tragedy and despair.

The Wordsmith. Just like Fëanor put a secret power into the Silmarils, the recipient of this token weaves magic into her or his writing. Stories, poems, and authors who receive this token show exceptional wordsmithing craft.

All of the tokens can be found on our birthday page.

Also, when sending in your choices for tokens, please don't forget to include your name on the form! Last night, we received a lot of token selections without names. We really want to give these out (and are trying to locate who might have sent them--if it was you, please let us know! :), but since each person can give each token only once, we can't give out tokens unless we know who's giving them.

Finally, the deadline for the "Numenorean Queens" compilation is tomorrow (August 9) for older work. If you're writing a new piece for this theme, there is no due date; send it in when you're finished and happy with it, and we'll add it then. But if you have an older story, essay, poem, or artwork that you'd like included in this theme, please send it no later than tomorrow.

Everything you could want to know about the birthday event and then some is on our birthday page. If, somehow, we've overlooked your question or concern, please just ask! :)

Hi, everyone,

Just a gentle reminder that today, August 7, is the last day to submit ideas for themes and tokens for our birthday event. You will still be able to send in work and award tokens to authors and stories. (If you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about, I'll include a brief explanation at the bottom of the post but will spare the rest of you who have now heard me say the same thing a dozen different ways. :)

We've gotten some excellent new themes and tokens that haven't been updated on the site yet due to the group owner (*ahem*) being busy with various jazz related to school, her job, and her chickens. However, I have mentally set aside tomorrow morning for catching up, so Eru willing and the creek don't rise, I should actually have everything up on the site and emails sent out to those of you who are waiting for them.

If you want to send in an idea for a theme or token, please do so soon! In about a day, I will remove that section of the site. Forms for sending ideas for themes and tokens are on the birthday page:

Suggest a Theme
Suggest a Token

Or you can email me/the moderators directly with your ideas.

Today is also the due date for older work that you would like included in the "Who? A Celebration of Minor and Original Characters" compilation. If you have an older story, essay, poem, or piece of artwork that you'd like included, please send it today or contact me. New work created for this theme is welcome at any time--send it along whenever you're finished and happy with it, and we will add it.

Thanks to everyone who has sent in ideas, work for the compilation, and awards for tokens so far! :)

What the Heck I'm Talking About )

[personal profile] dawn_felagund
Hi, everyone,

In the past few days, we've received several new themes and tokens for our birthday celebration that I wanted everyone to be aware of. Fyi, I generally update the website with new themes and tokens within a day of receiving them. The updated list is both on the birthday page and the sidebar that appears on every page. I'll post updates here and on LJ once or twice per week only to keep from spamming the list. :)

Here's what we have for new themes:

Through the Ages. Stories or artwork featuring characters that belong in more than one age of Arda such as Galadriel or Elrond and who influence more than one age of history.

The Songfic That Wasn't. This theme is for 'songfic' in which you use a line from a song once in your story (it may be the title, in the dialogue, in the description - wherever you like). You are expected to credit the original song or poem, of course, but you may not quote the entire song in your story.

And new tokens:

The Box of Tissues. To honor stories that manage to be even sadder than the original.

Straight to the Heart. This token can be given to any story or poem that affected the reader in any way possible. Maybe it made you start writing, it gave you thought about something, or just simply touched you deeply.

Not That There's Anything Wrong with That. The most unlikely slash pairing that actually works.

I will attach a complete list of current themes and tokens at the end of this message.

Remember, you can still suggest a theme, suggest a token, send in work for an existing theme, and recommend a story or author for one of our existing tokens. That's lots of options! :) More details on all of the above and forms to send in your suggestions and entries can be found on our birthday page.

And please do contact me or one of the other mods if you have any questions or need any help. Many, many thanks to everyone who has sent in stuff so far!

All the best,

Dawn

Complete List of Themes and Tokens )

Hi, everyone,

Well, tonight I sat down and got my act together. Sort of. ;) At least, I organized the many ideas for themes and tokens, birthday submissions, and token nominations that everyone has been so generously sending. I hope that there is a glimmer of a chance that I might be caught up with everything that I need to do by tomorrow.

We have several new themes, however, as well as a growing list of tokens that you can award to the story or author you think most deserving.

New Themes

Perfect Matches. Whether humorous or serious, this theme is for cross-overs of all sorts.

Five Things. Any variation of the "Five things . . ." or "Five times . . ." challenge would be acceptable. Might be "Five People Who Kissed Maedhros," or "Five Things Fëanor Invented," or even the format: "Five Things Turin Regretted and One He Did Not." That last one might be a stretch. Could it be possible to narrow regrettable acts committed by Turin to only five?

Minstrelsy and Music. Could be on one of the "professionals" (Maglor, Daeron, Ecthelion or Lindir)--or the Ainulindale--or on almost anyone singing.

Cuiviénen. Stories, poetry, and artwork about or set in Cuiviénen.

Tokens

Smells Like Teen Spirit. A story that features teens in their most adolescent behaviour.

Best Kiss. Soul meets soul on lovers' lips.
~Percy Bysshe Shelley, Prometheus Unbound
You know you want to nominate one. Even if you don't find one you love (and you will, of course, you will), imagine the fun you will have looking. All kisses welcome to be nominated for this category—Beren and Lúthien, Fëanor and Nerdanel, Fingon and Maedhros, etc., etc., etc. Celebrate your favorite kisses of The Silmarillion that Tolkien never got around to describing.

Melian's Girdle. An award for an exceptional portrayal and development of a female canon character or OFC in an adult rated romantic or erotic story.

Ilúvdiacritics. An award to honor references and periodicals that you find particularly helpful or illuminating.

The Splutter. For writing and authors that create spray effects on computer monitors and laptop screens.

Funniest Feanorians! For the most amusing stories and artwork featuring Feanor and his descendants.

Older Themes

We are still accepting old and new stories, ficlets, poems, and artwork for the older themes as well!

Most Sinister Villain. This theme is for writing and art where the baddie really makes one's skin crawl. Not one for likeable villains but for utterly horrid ones.

Who?? A Celebration of Minor and Original Characters. Writing and artwork entered for this theme focuses on minor canon characters or original characters.

Númenórean Queens. Writing and artwork that focuses on the Queens of Númenor.

Clash of the Titans. Powerful characters clash in conflicts of all sorts.

Do Something That's Never Been Done. Writing or artwork about doing the seemingly impossible. Can be as big as defeating Sauron or as small as any given character overcoming a personal impossibility.

Heroes and Antiheroes. Writing and artwork about characters who exhibit the traits of heroes but are also afflicted with flaws.
We are still accepting ideas for new themes and tokens until August 7th, so please send in your ideas! You can do that--as well as send work for inclusion in the theme compilations or choose a member or story to receive a token--on the birthday page.

Thank you so very much to everyone who has contributed ideas, sent work, or honored their fellow SWGers with tokens! :)

Best regards,

Dawn

Hi, everyone,

Thanks to everyone who emailed or posted on LJ yesterday expressing support for the birthday event. We've decided to go ahead with it, since there is interest, but we've extended the deadline for sending work for themes two weeks to give everyone more time. So our birthday won't happen exactly on our birthday, but it will mean that we all have time to put together something that really represents the range and talent of this group--definitely worth the wait! :)

The deadline for submitting ideas for themes and tokens will remain the same. This deadline is August 7, and you can send ideas for themes and tokens on the birthday page, or email me or the mods directly with your ideas.

Work for the first theme will also be due* August 7, and the first theme will be posted on August 10. We might rearrange the schedule a bit depending on the number of themes we receive, and I will update the schedule in the next few days, but this will definitely be the start date.

* Please remember that due dates apply only to older work that you are sending in for the compilation! If you are creating something new for one of the themes--"new" meaning that it has not been posted publicly anywhere before--you can send it in at any time during the birthday event, and we will add it to the birthday site. We are doing this so that those of you to inspired to create for the earlier themes are not punished by having less time to work than those working on the later themes.

I will be working to get the site updated today with the new information, along with some other admin stuff, so I will probably take a bit longer than I would like to acknowledge receipt of themes, tokens, and work sent in yesterday. If you sent something yesterday and don't hear from me by Tuesday, please let me know! We've already had our avid spam watchdog try to gobble one legitimate email. Many, many thanks to those of you who sent in things yesterday! :)

As always, please let me know if there are any questions. I hope that everyone has a lovely weekend! :)

Hi, everyone,

Today is the due date for the first theme, and our birthday plans ain't going so well! We've received a scattering of entries and theme ideas from a few people (and you know who you are--thank you so much! :) However, we recognize that we are in the middle of summer for most people--a bad time, with schools out and family vacations--and that we've given very short notice due to our own RL issues.

The other mods and I are discussing options over on our forum. But, first, we wanted to make sure that there weren't a dozen people who intend to send in theme/token ideas and stories but just haven't had a chance to do so yet. If you plan on participating, could you reply to this message or drop me a line privately? We want to put together something that will be fun and that people will want to participate in, not force an event at what appears to be a very bad time for many of us.

We do have low-maintenance back-up ideas, so our fifth birthday won't go unrecognized, and, if this event doesn't happen, we will run it at some other time when we can better give it the attention it deserves, possible for B2MeM11. (Yes, the other mods and I do start talking about B2MeM this early! :)

Thank you and my best regards to all,

Dawn

I just wanted to send a reminder that the due date for work for the first compilation for our birthday, "Most Sinister Villain," is due on July 24. That's just two days away! If you have stories, poems, artwork, or essays that fit this theme, we invite you to send them in for inclusion in this theme. We will be putting together a compilation on a hopefully lovely webpage of all of the work we receive.

New entries will be accepted at any time during the birthday event, but I know that some of you have done excellent work in the past with villains, and my comods and I are really hoping some of those pieces will be entered!

More details on the whole shebang are up on our website:

As always, if there are any questions, please let me know.

The SWG will turn five years old in exactly a week! As discussed in an earlier post, in celebration, we are inviting members to contribute ideas for themes for which we will be putting together compilations of old and new work. The first round of themes is now available! Please note that if you want to send older work for the earlier themes, you should do so as soon as possible, as the due dates are now less than a week away.

-Most Sinister Villain
-Who?? A Celebration of Minor and Original Characters
-Númenórean Queens
-Clash of the Titans
-Do Something That's Never Been Done
-Heroes and Antiheroes

Our birthday page has more information, including descriptions and due dates for each theme.

What Can You Send?

Anything that meets our site requirements! Every participant is welcome to send as much as s/he wants; however, we will only guarantee that we will post one of each of the following for each participant for each theme: story/essay excerpt (300 words or less), poem, artwork, and ficlet (300 words or less). If we have space, of course, we will post more. We will compile all of the works into a themed compilation that we will post on our website. (For those who may not have been around when we've done this in the past, Seven in '07 is a good example.)

We also encourage you to create new works for the challenges. Also, please remember that there is no due date for new works, only older works! We will keep adding new works for all of the themes throughout our birthday event.

Who Can Send It?

Anyone! You do not need to be an SWG member to participate. In fact, if you know of any individuals or groups who might be interested in participating, please pass the word along.

How to Send It?

You can always email work to us at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org, or you can use the handy-dandy form up on our birthday website (which basically accomplishes the same thing).

If you email us, please include your name as you want it to be spelled on the website, a webpage that you want your name to link to (optional), and an acknowledgment that you've read the document linked above.

We are also still looking for new themes, and we encourage everyone to send their ideas, no matter how wacky or ordinary you think they may be. Also, we have not received a single idea for a token yet, so please send those too! :) Our birthday website has information on all of the above, and please do ask if there are any questions.

The SWG is turning five at the end of the month! Because we are always looking for excuses to celebrate the creativity of our talented membership, then we asked everyone for ideas for how we could celebrate this milestone. You all generated lots of ideas, so we asked for feedback on favorites, intending to poll the group about what everyone wanted to do. However, we were able to fit all of the favorite ideas into a single event, so that's what we did. Thank you again to everyone who shared ideas and feedback on ideas!

Hi, all,

First of all, thank you to everyone who contributed ideas or weighed in on our discussion of possible plans for our birthday. (For those of you who may have missed it, SWG will turn five at the end of July, so we are coming up with possible ideas to celebrate.) Not surprisingly for such an imaginative bunch, you all came up with some awesome ideas! I am going to compile a list of ideas here with the goal of whittling it down to a few favorites that we can vote on.

A few thoughts: this is a very diverse group, so whatever we do should be inclusive of as many of our members as possible. Even though we are the Silmarillion Writers' Guild, our membership also includes artists and people who just like to discuss JRRT's stories.

Ideas range from very specific, such as a specific challenge, to very broad, such as a month of different challenges. We may be able to combine multiple ideas to create a single event. We're certainly open to suggestions on that.

If you contributed an idea and don't see it here, that is not because I didn't think it would work or that it didn't deserve to be included. It's because I forgot or overlooked it, plain and simple, while working between the many threads of this discussion. Please email me at DawnFelagund AT gmail DOT com or leave a comment on the LJ or Yahoo groups, and I'll not only fix my mistake but send some kind of homemade baked good or candy in apology. I'd send some of my homemade ice cream but suspect it would melt in the mail.

Finally, I'd like to be able to set up a poll in a week, on 22 June. Please email me or note your favorites in a comment to the LJ or Yahoo lists before then.

List of Ideas

Challenges
  • "Five things" challenge--stories/art constructed around a challenge beginning with "Five Things ..." (e.g., Elleth's "Five Things That Never Happened to Maglor Feanorion")
  • "Five ages" challenge--each week focuses on stories/art for a particular age, created for a daily challenge or theme
  • "Different themes of the Ainulindale" challenge--change a canon detail to show the story as it might have unfolded in the first or second themes of the Music
  • A different challenge theme each week for a month, suggested by members, of course
  • Recommendation challenge--recommend a story from the archive that fits a weekly/daily theme
  • Remix challenge--expand a detail or incident described in another author's story or illustrate an existing story

Competitions
  • A writing contest--create a story and members vote for their favorite
  • Silly awards--members hand out awards for not-so-serious topics
  • Silmfic award--members nominate and vote for a favorite Silm story

Other Stuff!
  • A compilation of work (old and new) that matches a daily/weekly challenge or theme (e.g., Seven in '07 or B2MeM 2008)
  • "Stories We Dare Not Tell"--outline a story you would be too embarrassed to write but sorta secretly find compelling
  • Fic swap--request a story to be written by one of our members and also write a story for someone else
