Our August 2018 newsletter has been posted!

This edition brings you the latest SWG news, including—like every summer—Akallabêth in August, during which we invite you to discover works focused on Númenor and the Second Age. To celebrate SWG’s thirteenth birthday, we invite you to participate in our “Teen Spirit” challenge. Finally, we are very pleased to announce great news about our moderator team, and to welcome our two latest new joiners.

Dawn Felagund is the author of this month's biography of Nerdanel. Nerdanel is a rare character among Tolkien's woman characters, possessing skill and fortitude rather than beauty, yet due to editorial intervention, has been removed almost entirely from the published text. Fans--mostly women--have effected her rescue through transformative works.

Whether enjoying a hot summer day or wrapped up to stay cosy in the height of austral winter, if you are craving for something new to read, head straight for the New at the Archive section, which lists all the stories, essays, and poems added or updated on our SWG archive during the past month of July. "[Nerdanel] retired to her father's house; but when it became clear that Fëanor and his sons would leave Valinor for ever, she came before him before the host started on its northward march, and begged that Fëanor should leave her the two youngest, the twins, or at least one of them. He replied: "Were you a true wife as you had been till cozened by Aulë, you would keep them all, for you would be coming with us. If you desert me you desert also all of our children. For they are determined to go with their father." Then Nerdanel was angry and she answered: "You will not keep all of them. One at least will never set foot on Middle-earth." "Take your evil omens to the Valar who will delight in them," said Fëanor. "I defy them." So they parted."

Title: Green Like Hope

Warnings: Mentions of arguments and an oblique reference to Maedhros's conception. No details on either of that, though. A little teenage angst.

Genre: Romance, I guess.

Summary: Nerdanel and Fëanor, the earliest days.

Author's Introduction: I don't think that there's anything that should be mentioned from my side, except perhaps that the story is rahter 'layered', but you'll notice that while reading. I'd welcome constructive criticism (no beta, unless there are glaring errors I did not catch) to this piece as it was rather experimental.

Since Dawn mentioned that old stories could also be entered into the challenge, here's one. I wrote this to participate in the Ring*Con writing contest and thought I might share... hope you'll enjoy it, even though it is a little weird and/or abstract.

I'm considering writing a piece about Feanor and Nerdanel. Can someone give me a run-down of the names their seven sons were given at birth, and the meanings of those names? Also, did they have any other children (like daughters)?

Author's note: I'm planning two more stories on the history of the palantiri, but I'm not sure whether they'd be eligible for posting here (if I get them done). One is set during the last days of Numenor, the other is in Valinor at the begining of the Fourth Age, (but the only LOTR character is Elrond). Guidance would be welcome!

Yesterday, Marta Layton came up with an idea for a drabble with a sexual theme. Okay, I know everybody out there is working on theirs, and that's why it's so quiet this morning! Anyway, I have NEVER written a drabble before, but I jumped on this one like Feanor on Nerdanel before Maitimo was born, and okay, I know it's lame, but, hey! It's my very first one!!
